An excellent, very readable primer of common sense wisdom of humanity. Sadly common sense today has become UNCOMMON; would be great if this was required reading for adults.

Bill Gates Sr.'s positive attitude describes examples of people showing up to do good for their families, neighbors, countries and the world. He starts off with the good points of his own family, and extends to neighbors, colleagues, and friends, and strangers he's met as the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. He credits a few of those special individuals who have helped the world historically and in modern times. As well as those who had the strength and courage to do what they could to get help for their children and communities.

His priorities are the fields of science, medicine, education, and agriculture. He shows how it doesn't have to take much to show up and do much good. Just need to be willing and caring. Groups of regular people working together can improve lives.

Anyone reading this can benefit, and help others benefit.

Every chapter is a story or event or philosophy in Bill Sr's life. A self made man who, with his wife as an equal, created a family environment to allow his son to flourish in his own right.

I am about a third of this guy's age, and I cannot imagine what it would be like to have the mental energy to do all of the things that he and his family do! It's a great book if you'd like to learn how to be more involved in the community and the world.

rabck from HI77; thoughts from the Microsoft guy's Dad (also named Bill Gates) on what to do with life. Just "show up" and a lot of other things that he talks about has served him well in his life. This one will travel forward as a rabck.

Yep. This book isn't written by the Bill Gates you and I know and hold dear to our hearts, it's written by his dad: Bill Gates, Sr. Here's where it gets confusing: the Bill Gates you and I know is Bill Gates the III or "Trey," as Dad Sr. called him. So what’s up with a Sr. begetting a Trey? Turns out Bill Sr. is actually a junior, or, a tad more pretentiously, II. Here's how things work, though: once Bill Sr.’s dad died, Bill Sr., then a Jr., became a Sr. (i.e., as he is now). But, interestingly, Trey stayed a Trey. Very strange.

So what's the book about? It's about success. Specifically: get to know wealthy and successful people. Success is all about who you know, as you and I both know. "Showing Up For Life" means, basically, Show Up At Events Where Wealthy Successful People Will Be.1

One of my favorites of the year. Very interesting and inspirational, by THE Bill Gates' father.
