Before the W.A.C. Bennett dam in B.C. was built, the original inhabitants, both settlers and First Nations were required to leave. 350,000 acres of land were flooded to create Williston Lake, the water reservoir which powers the dam. The book doesn’t go into such details, detailing instead the harsh realities of life trapping and farming for settlers. Peter Stott and his brother Tom came from England, as did many young men looking for adventure in western Canada and found it in a life that required resourcefulness, courage, industriousness, and stamina. The places where they lived are long gone, inundated by the waters of Williston Lake.
