Once upon a time, it was, apparently, possible for a man and his companion to walk around a number of various locations and then decide to notate, with a certain specificity, sights and sounds (and occasionally smells) experienced in situ. Or, alternatively, perhaps he premeditated documenting his rambles, for some reason, unlikely as that might seem. Regardless, a chronicle came into being, and, once existent, was deemed of sufficient consequence to circulate to publishers with the presumed purpose of edifying the public at large. Oddly enough, a publisher was found willing to expend time and other resources on furthering this venture. One presumes, in the fullness of time, that booksellers were induced to purvey the fruits of these efforts to persons of requisite means and that these, in their turn, to offer up coin of the realm in what must have been considered a fair exchange of value.
