Jack Vance has an almost unparalleled imagination and in order not to become constrained by the English language, he often created new words, enabling him to elaborate his worlds beyond previous limits of scope. This Lexicon will help readers bridge the gap and heighten the appreciation of Vance's works.

In early days, when reading his stories, I often reached for the dictionary (hard cover, Penguin, New English) for many of the words I came across, only to find them - not there. I subsequently hoped that someone would catalogue all of Vance's unique terms. Dan Temianka has done quite an admirably job in the second edition. (The first, missing some of the imput from later stories, is, apparently, something of a rarity.
I've taken off one star because of the inconsistency of the entries. In some, there is more of an explanation in the story itself and therefore gives no further enlightenment - others are a pleasure to read and enhance the story on re-reading.… (mehr)
