- Ella Cheever Thayer was born in Portland, Maine, the daughter of an apothecary, George Augusta Thayer, and his wife Rachel Ella Cheever Thayer. She worked as a telegraph operator at the Brunswick Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts, and later used her experiences as the basis for a bestselling humorous novel Wired Love, A Romance of Dots and Dashes (1879).
She also wrote plays, including The Lords of Creation (1883), reflecting her work as a suffragist; and Amber, a Daughter of Bohemia (1883). She also contributed short stories to national magazines.
