The Gilded Curse by Marilyn Turk is a historical suspense novel. Combining secrets, mysteries, suspense, and World War II, this book drew me in immediately. As the first book in the new series, A Suspicious Shores, this book perfectly blends historical fiction and clean romance.

I love the setting of Jekyll Island and the wonderful way Marily Turk sets up this story. I loved getting to know Russell and Lexie. I wanted to continue reading to discover how the author would develop these characters and the storyline.

I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. I recommend this book to anyone who loves clean historical novels filled with some suspense.

So, if you enjoy historical suspense novels, check out The Gilded Curse by Marilyn Turk for yourself.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed the setting and the historical details that sets this book up as very well written. Pearl Harbor will always be remembered and the author takes us back to that place where lives changed forever. Lexie is grieving the loss of her brother and more recently her mother. Going back to the cottage owned by her family she is greeted by mystery, secrets and an old friend. I like how the story drives readers to keep reading as we see twists that suddenly appear to keep us on our toes.

Lexie has no intention of staying long until Russell convinces her that he will help find out who sent her the telegram that brought her to this place. With a bit of romance and faith this story was fun to read. I enjoyed watching Lexie and Russell rekindle their friendship and was excited to see where it would go. The strange goings on at the cottage was intriguing and kept me guessing .

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

“The Gilded Curse” is a captivating mystery that surprised me! I love when I’m kept in suspense and am not privy to the answers from the beginning.

I don’t read a lot of believe this is the third book I’ve read by this author in 2023. I love how the prologue opens during Christmastime—even though the setting is a 1941 sanatorium. Yikes. I was instantly intrigued.

Lexie and Russell are easy to connect to. I empathized with Lexie, with so much going on and adding emerging feelings for Russell into the mix.

I appreciate the mysterious atmosphere the author creates, and the interesting characters and plot. I’ve never visited Jekyll Island, but I feel as if I have now. I love the elements of danger, romance, history, and suspense, but it’s the features of faith and inspiration that I relish in the most. There’s also a peek at the next series installment in the back of the book. (I’m intrigued—again!)

First Line (Prologue): “Mother, how do you like the tree?”

“Lexie was beginning to believe there were too many secrets on the island, including those that involved her. She promised herself she’d discover the truth and trust Russell to help her. Unless he was too busy keeping his own secrets.”

Marilyn Turk combines romance, suspense, mystery, and WWII to bring us the first book in the Suspicious Shores series, The Gilded Curse.

In 1942, Lexie Smithfield has returned to the summer playground of the rich and famous, Jekyll Island, to dispose of her family's dilapidated cottage. Having lost her father to an accident, her mother to dementia, and her brother to the war, Lexie has no one to rely on but herself.

When Lexie returns, she finds a childhood friend, Russell Thompson, superintendent of the club, waiting for her. She also encounters former unwanted acquaintances, a surly gardener, and rumors of ghosts in her cottage.

The cottage has secrets and is most forbidding. Yet, someone is after something valuable in the old cottage. As things go from bad to worse, Lexie hears over and over in her head her Mother’s voice, claiming the curse of Jekyll Island has ruined their family.

With strange sightings off the coast and strange happenings in the cottage, can Lexie and Russell work together, overcoming social barriers, to find the truth before the curse claims its last victim? Can Lexie find her way back to God, or is He angry at her because she has ignored Him for so long?

I loved the topics broached in this touching story. PTSD, mental illness, respect for veterans, better treatment for mentally ill, social barriers, fears, fear of God. All are a natural part of the story.
And the history! I love learning new things, and I never knew some of these facts about WWII and our own shores.

I highly recommend this book. I immediately went to my fave retailer and bought the sequel, Shadow of the Curse, for more adventures with Lexie and Russell.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. I also bought an ebook. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Destiny needs you. Please come right away.

Lexie hasn’t visited Jekyll Island and the club for many years. The family quit traveling there for vacation when her father died under suspicious circumstances. As the sole survivor it was time to make a decision regarding the Destiny cottage. Then came the cryptic message. Imagining Russel, the club superintendent, had sent it, Lexie traveled with selling in mind. However, the mystery and secrets were not to be denied.

A wonderful story occurring at a time when the German submarines were sinking ships off the eastern shore, creating a great deal of intrigue and excitement. Could she possibly figure out what was going on in the midst of all of this?

An early copy of Suspicious Shores Book 1 was received through Winged Publications and CelebrateLit. These impressions are my own and were in no way solicited.

Part of Heroines of WWII series.
Set in 1941 in England and Germany.

Beryl Clark- a Courageous and selfless woman, who loves taking care of the people she loves, her family, friends and neighbors. She works as a secretary at Waddington's, a company that makes board games and as a volunteer for ARP.
Her Brother James and friend Kenneth are prisoners in Germany at a POW camp. She desperately wants to help them. She hears from a friend that they are making escape kits and putting them in board games to send to the POW through Red Cross. She has an idea. She sends them a letter explaining about the board game and hidden clues in the letter. When they receive the monopoly game they figure out the clue from the letter and find other clues in the game to help them escape. She prays that the Germans will not get a hold of it and that her Brother and Kenneth can get out safely without the Germans spotting them and killing them.
This is the first book by this author. It is very well written and kept my interest. I always read the authors notes.

Abby Baker, a recent widow, returns home to Hope Harbor to assist her sick mother. She also hopes to start a new chapter in her life. She admired the courage her grandmother had, as she raised a little kid by herself and took on the job of lighthouse keeper after her husband drowned. Abby is burdened by grief and fears of failure. What was Grandma Abigail's secret formula? What kept her going?

Lighthouse enthusiast Carson Stevens purchased the dilapidated Hope Island lighthouse with the intention of restoring it and converting it into a bed and breakfast. When Carson asks Abby to help renovate the lighthouse, he gets more than he bargained for.

In her quest to learn the truth about her grandmother, who served as the lighthouse's official guardian, Abby demonstrates her skill as a sleuth. The amount of effort required was astounding. I appreciated how Abby reads through her grandmother's journal to comprehend the day-to-day activities of a lighthouse keeper and the time when she assumed control of the lighthouse duties. I really enjoyed how the suspense rose as the WWII narrative developed.

I enjoy learning about history in an enlightening way. It’s a wonderful blending of historic details about lighthouse restorations in WWII, and daily life in Main. The combination of historical facts about lighthouses WWII, a mystery and a sweet romance is a winning combination.

Abigail’s Secret by Marilyn Turk is a dual-timeline story. Abby Baker, newly widowed, returns to Hope Harbor to help her ailing mother and work to restart her life. She, along with her daughter, works to forge a new life.

Carson Stevens loves lighthouses and sets out to restore the one at Hope Harbor. He wants to make it into a bed-and-breakfast. As he and Abby create a friendship, they also work to renovate the lighthouse her grandparents tended.

With mysterious happenings and flashbacks through her grandmother's journals, Marilyn Turk does an excellent job building the storyline and creating meaningful interactions between characters.

This book is Christian genre and it fits fairly well. I enjoyed the book for the most part. I liked Abigail and Carson. They interact well together. Their characters are fairly well-developed and they interact well together. The story flowed very well and kept my interest throughout. The scenery was described well but could have been better.

What I did not like was the use of a dash when a comma should have been used. It made me wonder what the words were at times and disrupted my reading. There were also a couple of wrong words used. One was when grandfather was used instead of father. Both of these things threw off my reading. I hope the editing gets reviewed.

I received this book through Celebrate Lit and I am not required to leave a positive review. These thoughts are my own and freely given. I was given an ebook to read and review.

The cover words of Some Family Secrets Aren’t Meant To Be Found drew me in and I knew I just had to find out what they were. I was not disappointed with the twists and turns and when you center it around an old lighthouse that reveals secrets that were hidden you have a winning combination. If you have ever been a single mother you will be able to identify with the self doubt these characters experience. Carson undertaking the renovation of an old lighthouse is astounding and having helped my carpenter husband on projects I could identify with him and the frustration when things go wrong. I could envision him and Abby working together and their hearts and hurts being worked on at the same time. I appreciate the research that is evident in this book. It is well written and seeps into your heart as secrets are revealed and lives are changed. I highly recommend adding to your book pile, as I throughly enjoyed this.

“I promised I’d keep the secret until I die, and I will keep that promise.”

After reading a previous book by Marilyn Turk, I quickly decided I wanted to read her newest, Abigail’s Secret. It is a dual timeline, one part taking place in the present and one in the 1940s, both involving Hope Harbor, Maine.

Abby Baker is a widow with a five-year-old daughter. She has returned to her hometown to care for her mother, whose health is declining. At a service honoring her lighthouse keeper grandparents, Abby meets Carson Stevens, the man who bought that lighthouse. Carson dreams of turning the lighthouse into a B and B.

Between her mother’s memories and an unexpected discovery, we slowly see Abby’s grandmother, Abigail’s, life unfold. Abigail is a person Abby highly regards for her strength and resiliency. What makes Abigail so strong?

At first, I wasn’t very invested in Abby and Carson’s lives, and I did have a few questions about Abby’s mother’s memories. By the last fourth of the book, the action picked up and the pieces began to come together. I was flipping pages as quickly as possible at that point. I really did enjoy the conclusion! (And I’d love to see that renovated lighthouse.) Discussion questions are included at the end, so the book could be used for a book club.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“I keep reading my Bible and repeating the verses that say, “You are not alone. The Lord is with you.” And I know He is, even if it doesn’t feel like it sometimes.”

“Maybe it was time to quit running away and start running toward something.”

“Don’t make promises about the future. You never know what the future holds.”

This book was a joy to read. It was fascinating as well because it included facts about lighthouses. I collect lighthouses but haven’t bought a new one in awhile. The author delivers a look at the history of lighthouses and how important they were especially during the war. I can’t imagine the stress it was to manage a lighthouse knowing you were helping keep people safe and to warn of spy boats or submarines.

Abby has moved back to her hometown to help take of her mother and also grieve the loss of her husband. She has her hands full working part time, taking care of her little girl and watching out for her mom whose health has deteriorated. I like that Abby is always willing to help others. There are times when I think she takes on more than she should. Has she taken time to grieve the death of her husband?

Carson was easily my favorite character. He is driven to restore the lighthouse and turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. Not everyone is happy with that idea though. One certain person from town who owns several B&B’s does not want Carson to succeed. I smell a little hint of sabotage about to happen. I sure hope Carson is on his toes and observant of what is going on with mishaps during the remodeling.

Without giving too much of the story away, the lighthouse has a big part in the story as it brings Abby and Carson together. What is discovered in the wall will take us back to the 190s. The story starts to move at a quick place towards the end and I really wanted a little more details about the secret that was revealed. I could almost imagine another book coming from this one where we can dig a lot deeper into the past or perhaps follow sone of the characters as they start a new beginning. The faith element is there but perhaps a little light.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

(2.5 / 5)

Beryl Clarke is doing her part in England during WWII, working as an air raid warden and helping her mom get through the devastation of her husband's recent death during a bombing. More bad news comes when they learn that Beryl's brother James has been captured by the Germans. The women will do whatever they can to help, even if it's just packing Red Cross boxes and their own care packages for James and his friend Kenneth, who is also in the camp. But then Beryl learns of an escape kit disguised as a Monopoly game that is headed to various POW camps and knows she has to try to give the prisoners a heads up about it.

This book promises intrigue, adventure, and romance, but I found very little of any of those things. Most of the story was just showing life in Leeds during WWII, as well as life in a POW camp. James's friend Kenneth is actually the second MC and is captured and taken to a POW camp before James is. He attempts to escape several times, unsuccessfully, but more detail is given to his time in the camp than the actual escapes. Kenneth and Beryl knew each other before the war started, when the two of them and James all attended Oxford University, and Kenneth and Beryl both thought fondly of each other at that time. This is what we're told. So when Kenneth starts writing letters for his crippled friend James, Kenneth and Beryl remember each other fondly and start to hope for more some day. This we're also told. The romance doesn't really develop as much as it is just there for us to be told about. Maybe some flashbacks to the time they knew each other before would have helped, but overall, it just felt forced and empty.

The story of the Monopoly game being sent to POWs with an escape kit hidden inside is such a tiny part of this book. I feel like the story would have been better to have been more focused on the camp and less on Beryl's life, but then, the series is called "Heroines of WWII," so clearly she needed to be a main character. I also think it would have been better if Kenneth had been a stranger that Beryl met and got to know through letters he wrote for her brother, and then maybe the romance could have been more of a budding one by the end of the book, rather than what it was. Also, the epilogue was completely unnecessary, and that reminds me of the incredible coincidences that happen throughout the book. After several of these moments, I still thought for sure that my suspicion about the identity of a certain character's relative would turn out to be wrong, because there was no reason I could think of to have such a huge coincidence. But sure enough...well, I won't give away any spoilers. And the truth is, most people probably won't be bothered by most of this. If you're a fan of WWII-related Christian romance and aren't bothered by the things I mentioned in my review, please do give the book a try. It does have plenty of good reviews.

Thank you to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for providing me a copy of this book to review.

The Escape Game by Marilyn Turk is the ninth book in the multi-author Heroines of WWll series. Beryl Clark is now working for the Waddington game company in Leeds, England and taking care of her mother. Her brother James is shot down and sent to a Nazi prison camp. Beryl learns that her company is making board games with escape information in them. How can she let her brother know about the game without revealing the secrets to the enemy? This was a very interesting story. I was expecting more about the escape games, but they were only talked about in a few chapters. It was a very clever way to help the POW’s escape! Now I’m curious to find out more how these games were made and used during the war!

I received this book from Celebrate-Lit for my honest review.

I love it when I read and learn history at the same time especially little tidbits that I had no idea happened. This is one of those books and I loved everything about it from the characters to the writing style to the facts contained within. I felt like I could visualize those POW camps and how they looked forward to those Red Cross boxes especially when they found secrets hidden within a game that could help with a plan of escape. So innovative and clever and to keep hope alive for freedom. The element of faith tied everything together and showed how important it is when everything else seems hopeless. Beryl was an outstanding character to me with the compassion she had for her mother, her friends, and even strangers that became friends because she was willing to help and be what God intended her to be. I loved this Heroines of WWII installment and it will go on my keeper shelf with the other books in this series. It’s nice that each one is a standalone and show how important women were in the war effort. I highly recommend reading as soon as possible.

The Escape Game by Marilyn Turk is a historical fiction work with intrigue, suspense, and romance elements. Set during the time of the bombing blitz of England by Germany, this book centers around Beryl Clarke, who works as a secretary at the Waddington Game Company. While she cares for her mother and deals with the war at home, her brother James and his best friend Kenneth Anderson meet at a POW camp in Germany.

Beryl cares for her mother in Leeds and serves as an air warden for their town. Meanwhile, Kenneth, James, and their fellow prisoners work to escape their prison. With elements of suspense surrounding escaping and then being recaptured, Kenneth endures a lot. I wanted to see Kenneth, James, and the others escape.

When MI5 agents request assistance from the Waddington Game Company, someone at the company shares crucial information with Beryl. I was intrigued by the idea of hiding items to help prisoners escape in a board game. Plus, trying to share that information in letters to prisoners who must go through sensors caused me to pause for a minute.

I had to keep reading this book to discover the ending. I recommend it. With times of loss, heartbreak, and devastation, the author includes moments of joy through a wedding, hope through helping an aging woman whose husband died under tragic circumstances, and a kitten with personality; this book has a lot to offer.

So if you enjoy works of Christian historical fiction, check out The Escape Game by Marilyn Turk for yourself. I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Marilyn Turk gives readers a look at life on the home front in England as well as life in a POW camp for the royal airmen during World War II (before America entered the war) in The Escape Game.

Beryl is a secretary who does her duty to remind citizens to close their blackout shades and helps during air raids. When she’s not serving England, she’s following the motto instilled in the people to keep calm and carry on. But you really get a look into her heart when she meets an elderly woman named Elinor (and that’s all I’m going to say about that because I do not want to spoil anything for you). When Elinor’s brother is captured and taken to a German POW camp, she begins writing him and an American acquaintance named Kenneth who is also in the camp.

From Kenneth’s perspective, we get some insight into the POW camp for airmen (which, as stated in the book, is less severe than many of the other camps) and their drive to not become complacent. Their tenacity in finding a way to escape and return home.

The history of the escape kit hidden in the Monopoly games is fascinating and totally worth the wait for the details. The romance occurs through the written word, which is both great (for sharing yourself) and disappointing (because so little of the romance occurs face to face between Beryl and Kenneth). But when I was done reading, I was completely satisfied with the time I’d spent with Beryl, Kenneth, and the other characters.

Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive or negative review. All opinions are my own.

The book takes us to WWII and the devastation people endured. It is hard to read about the bombs going off in neighborhoods and the horrific loss that happened everyday. Can yo imagine hearing sirens going off where you need to go to a bomb shelter for safety? The women who are left behind must find ways to support the family. They were given rations that were barely enough for a family. The author paints a realistic look by her vivid details. I could hear the sirens, bombs and screams as families ran for safety.

Beryl is a very good character and tries to do her part to help out. She left college to take care of her mum and I loved how compassionate she was. Her heart is full with wanting to help others and takes in an elderly lady after her home was destroyed.

James and Kenneth find themselves at the same POW camp. I’m sure is was a comfort for them to be together since they are friends. They seem to be treated better than other POW’s because they are airmen . It was nice that they were able to receive packages from home as well as from the Red Cross. Their determination to escape was intriguing. There were many attempts and I wondered if they would succeed. Their bravery is one that I hope we all recognize. They represent those who fought for our freedom.

The most fascinating thing for me was how the game Monopoly was used as an escape plan. Hidden within the game were useful tools and information which could help the men escape. I had never heard of this and was very interested in learning more about a very clever way to help POW’s escape by the use of a game.

I loved how James never gave up telling Kenneth about God. At one point Kenneth realizes that God is watching over him. He now knows that without God he would not be safe. The relationship between Beryl and Kenneth were nice but it seemed to develop very fast. I liked how the past and present are brought together in this beautiful illustration of hope.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

“…as members of the Royal Air Force, it is our duty to try to escape.”

Bravo for Marilyn Turk, who, in The Escape Game, has penned a very different kind of WWII book than I have yet read. Part of the Heroines of WWII series from Barbour, each novel stands alone. This is a slightly dual-timeline novel, where we meet Grandmother Beryl at nearly 100, then go back and learn of her life in war-torn England.
So many themes are presented, while the storyline is so engaging, you won’t want to stop reading until you find out what happens to the POW’s. Of course, you’ll want to discover whether the relationship between Beryl and American Kenneth can grow by heavily edited correspondence.

A bereaved widow, young women helping the war effort in ways that take bravery I can only imagine, an elderly lady with no family, and men desperate to escape the POW camp. What wonderfully diverse characters, each with their particular strengths and weaknesses. The thought that impressed me, was from the King of England down to the average Britisher, so many gave so much in the way of self-sacrifice. And many understood the value and hope provided by trusting in God at such a horrific time. Plus, the need to pull together to be successful. Kenneth may have some room to grow in all of these areas! Thankfully, people around him blaze the way spiritually as he attempts to blaze the way physically.

My fave secondary character? It would have to be a tie between Beryl’s mother (what a journey she makes in this book), and Mrs. Dowd (she both complicates and enriches others’ lives).

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit via NetGalley. No positive review was required, and all opinions are my own.

Notable Quotables:

“The greatness of any nation is in the spirit of its people.”- King George during WWII

“As far as Kenneth was concerned, if he wanted a miracle, he’d have to create it himself. And if God wanted to help, He was welcome. He could start with a hot dish of jambalaya.”

“He pitied those who didn’t have that hope, because it was hope that kept them going.”

Fascinating story using actual accounts of POW camps and home front situations during WWII. Ms. Turk uses historical facts to personalize the realities of life during the war.
Beryl, a secretary at a Game factory in Leeds, England, is also an Air Raid Warden. The author puts us right there during bombings and the aftermath. The story goes between Beryl, her mother and friends at home to a POW camp where her pilot brother James and his friend Kenneth end up. It was very informative about the way prisoners tried to escape and reminded me of watching Stalag 17 and The Great Escape. There are surprises in store for the characters and danger is never far away.
I especially liked the kitten Spitfire and the elderly lady that Beryl and her mother take in after her house is demolished.
Always a treat is the Author Notes and explanations of historical facts and research.

The Escape Game, by Marilyn Turk, is a wonderful addition to the Heroines of WWII series. This story takes place in England and a German prison camp during WWII. This is a powerful story that is very well written. It was easy to imagine the dreadful situations the prisoners of war were faced with. This story brought out the fact that the POWs did everything they could to endure their situations despite the lack of food and confined spaces they lived in. I especially liked that the story showed the importance of faith the POWs had.

I especially enjoyed how people helped each other. Beryl worked a regular job, cared for her mother and was involved in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Beryl's mother was deep in grief after losing her husband, yet she managed to help with the Red Cross. It was inspirational to see how much her character changed from the beginning of the story to the end. I enjoyed the information about the Monopoly games that were distributed in the care packages to the POWs. This is such a good story to read, to get a different look at what happened during WWII in Europe.

I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story. This is my honest review.

A Monopoly piece - a tiny race-car - but oh the story it tells.

War brings many undesirable things with it, not the least of which was the air raid sirens that peeled through the silence in Leeds, England in 1941. As an Air Raid Warden, Beryl has the unfortunate privilege of encouraging folks to find shelter, sometimes just managing to do so herself. Many were not so fortunate. Fathers, sons and brothers are fighting, including James, her brother, as well as his college buddy, Kenneth. POWs in Germany, escape is at the top of their list.

Waddingtons, a game manufacturer, is commissioned to make a very special Monopoly game - one fit for those who are stuck behind enemy lines. Will James and his fellow POWs receive one of these special games - one that can help them escape?

This early copy of Heroines of WWII was received through Barbour Publishing and NetGalley. These thoughts are my own and were in no way solicited.

I am so glad I turned to the back and read the Author's Notes first. The information there added to the pleasure of reading The Escape Game. This book highlights the emotional toll of the bombings Europeans endured during WW II as well as the uncertainty about the well-being of loved ones. The plot was interesting as the story moved between Beryl Clarke in Leeds, England and Kenneth Bordelon in a POW camp in Germany. It held my interest as I read whenever the opportunity presented itself. It was a satisfying read up until the last chapter and epilogue in which everything was brought to a rushed and highly unsatisfying conclusion. I found myself mentally filling in the holes left in the story.

I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of The Escape Game from Barbour Publishing via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

An inspiring read for WW2 fans!
A good look at life on both the home front in England and from the inside of a German prisoner of war camp during the early war years. This well researched story includes some interesting history, with strong family ties, friendship and faith.
It was fascinating to learn about the use of a board game as a way to pass information to POW's. The scenes in the camp made me think of watching the show Hogan's Heroes and the movie The Great Escape, both favorites. It made me appreciate again the bravery of the people who actually lived through these things. They were so young also!
It is easy to read, quick paced and had a satisfying ending.
This would be a good read for teens and up. Recommend!

"The hated "nasties," as some of her friends called the Germans,..."

A parallel story of life in Leeds, England, and living in a German POW camp for military pilots in Barth, Germany.

Beryl is a resourceful single young woman living in Leeds, England. She moved home to take care of her mother, soon after her father died in one of the bombing raids by the Germans. She keeps busy by working for a printing company that makes games, and also a second job, working to help during the bombing raids, to make sure everyone got into shelters and stayed safe.

Beryl's brother James and his friend Kenneth are pilots who are captured and taken to a POW camp.

The prisoners of war are allowed to receive one Red Cross package each, however often they come. Occasionally, a Monopoly game is included in the box, usually, it's a deck of cards. The printing company is helped in making an escape plan and tucking it secretively into the Monopoly games.

The way the games are arranged is ingenious, I learned a lot from the book. Highly recommend.

I received a complimentary copy of #TheEscapeGame from #BarbourFiction @BarbourPublishing I was under no obligation to post a review.
