Faruk Ulay

Faruk Ulay's book is a work of many levels. The poetry sounds a dystopian lament for a detached society void of meaning, with language operating in a prophetic and vaguely scriptural tone. The images present in the verse are elegiac, and they are complimented and equaled by the artwork. Ulay presents dirty and undisturbed dolls backgrounded by cut and layered paper. The background extends onto facing pages into the text itself for a unique visual. The visuals and the poetry both conjure a feeling of loss, the dolls evoking a fall and a pervading emptiness.
