Wager first appears in the historical record as a Franciscan friar at Oxford, where he rose to the position of subdeacon. The friary was suppressed in 1538, shortly before the birth of the playwright William Wager who may have been his son. In 1560 Lewis became rector of St James Garlickhythe in London On 5 April 1560 Wager became rector of the parish of St James Garlickhythe, London, where he was buried two years later on 18 July 1562. Posthumously registered in 1566 was the play 'A new enterlude … of the life and repentaunce of Marie Magdalene, not onlie godlie, learned and fruitefull, but also well furnished with pleasaunt myrth and pastime, very delectable for those which shall hear or reade the same', written by Lewis but possibly added to by his son. It was performed at universities of the time.
