The book opens with the birth of a new baby on a night the sky is dancing with stars. Is this the one the druids have been waiting for? A prophecy has foretold that on the night of the shower of stars one will be born who can stem the tide of evil approaching the land. But the druids are looking for a boy child and the only birth they can find on that night is raven-haired Tegen... but she is a girl.....

Throughout her childhoold Tegen is rejected by the village druid, the oldest and most venerated druid in the area and as Tegen approaches her thirteenth birthday the druids are still searching for the boy they will name Star Dancer.
