What a great take on Dickens' 'Christmas Carol'! I really liked this modernized Rock & Roll version of a classic that is familiar to all of us.

The story opens on Christmas Eve with Jude Shaw, a lead singer of the band The Blood Roses, and his band mates ending a gig by being booed off the stage.

All the mates are frustrated, but Jude is the one that piles all the blame on the mates, and ends up leaving them with a huge chip on his shoulder. As he believes that the band will probably break up, he finds solace in thinking at least he has his girlfriend Carrie to understand him and share in his troubles.

As much as I liked Jude and Carrie and Jude’s ‘awakening’ of his character that Ms. Wells did an outstanding job of portraying, I must say I was impressed with her imagination of the visiting spirits and the shapes they chose to first appear to Jude.

I had so much fun just guessing who they were. The Ghost of Forewarning was looking like Elvis before he transformed; ghost of Christmas Past came in disguise of John Lennon; ghost of Christmas Present might have taken a disguise of Freddie Mercury while the ghost of Christmas Future came wearing a mask of Curt Cobain....but then, I just might have this all wrong.

You need to read the book to figure these ghosts out. All were too much fun to watch as they took our hero Jude on a little trip to show him who he was, is and might be.

The novella is short; the story poignant and sweet; cute and funny; just perfect for a rainy and windy afternoon. In my case, holed up in the basement with my cats and hoping that the tornado warnings would end with no damage to the neighborhood…which thank God they did!

Dead Hope by Nicky Wells is a 2017 publication.

Nicky Wells’ first foray into the mystery thriller genre is an ideal combination of mystery and romance.

In order to keep herself from going to jail, Cat Hope followed the orders of the judge by completing rehab, starting community service and getting a job, which is where she meets Kay Mahon.

Kay lives the double life of a mild mannered office worker by day, and hacker by night. When he takes Cat under his wing, the two discover they have a few things in common. After hearing Cat’s true story, Kay vows to help her find out what really happened the night her rock star parents died.

This is one of those books that will appeal to a wide audience, ranging from traditional mystery, cozy mystery, romantic suspense and maybe even contemporary romance lovers.

Nicky is a big fan of rock music, and has written several novels with rock music backdrop, so it was only fitting she kept that theme running in the background. But, the story is centered clearly around Cat, who need to find out what actually happened to her parents so that she can find peace and move on with her life.

Kay turns out to be the perfect person to help her investigate. He has real skills with a computer, although he does crossover a few blurry lines with the law on occasion.

As the couple begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together, the simmering chemistry between them begins to burn hotter and hotter.

There are a few laugh out loud moments along the way, and some quick witted banter and dialogue, as well as a few jaw -dropping twists I never saw coming!

Overall, this novel mostly comes down on the light side, with little graphic violence, and is infused with humor and romance to round things out, making this a very easy to read, entertaining mystery.

7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells is a 2015 publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well, with a title like this, one simply can not help but be curious, because this is the stuff nightmares are made of. The thought of it alone is enough to make a person break out in a cold sweat. But, for Alex and Casey, the nightmare is a terrifying, and as you can imagine, frustrating reality.

Alex, a rock musician and Casey, a singer, are the perfect couple. They are deeply in love, compatible in every way, including in the bedroom, until they get married and take off on a three week honeymoon vacation. All of sudden Alex is unable to perform sexually, and no matter what they do nothing seems to help. Initially, they make light of it, but as time passes, desperation sets in. Casey and Alex then embark on a hilarious quest to restore their once sizzling sex life.

I have said this on several occasions, but it is worth mentioning again, I have a love/hate relationship with romantic comedy novels, mainly because what passes as comedy in many cases, is just plain silly to me. Then there are RomComs like this one. Laugh out loud funny, but cohesive, and underneath it all a wonderful love story. The lengths Casey and Alex go to and the things they are willing to try, which often leads to “epic fails” are hilarious, and sometimes cringe worthy. But, there is also the the mounting frustration, then the desperation, then the sadness as the situation begins to take it's toll on the relationship. Can the marriage be saved? Is there really curse? Will Alex get his Mojo back?

If you enjoy contemporary romance, and romantic comedy, you really should check this one out. It 's a super fun read, and I definitely recommend it.
