The story opens on Christmas Eve with Jude Shaw, a lead singer of the band The Blood Roses, and his band mates ending a gig by being booed off the stage.
All the mates are frustrated, but Jude is the one that piles all the blame on the mates, and ends up leaving them with a huge chip on his shoulder. As he believes that the band will probably break up, he finds solace in thinking at least he has his girlfriend Carrie to understand him and share in his troubles.
As much as I liked Jude and Carrie and Jude’s ‘awakening’ of his character that Ms. Wells did an outstanding job of portraying, I must say I was impressed with her imagination of the visiting spirits and the shapes they chose to first appear to Jude.
I had so much fun just guessing who they were. The Ghost of Forewarning was looking like Elvis before he transformed; ghost of Christmas Past came in disguise of John Lennon; ghost of Christmas Present might have taken a disguise of Freddie Mercury while the ghost of Christmas Future came wearing a mask of Curt Cobain....but then, I just might have this all wrong.
You need to read the book to figure these ghosts out. All were too much fun to watch as they took our hero Jude on a little trip to show him who he was, is and might be.
The novella is short; the story poignant and sweet; cute and funny; just perfect for a rainy and windy afternoon. In my case, holed up in the basement with my cats and hoping that the tornado warnings would end with no damage to the neighborhood…which thank God they did!
