Mark Whalan is Senior Lecturer in American Literature and Culture at the University of Exeter. He is the editor of The Letters of Jean Toomer, 1919-1924 (2006), and the author of Race, Manhood and Modernism in America (2007) and The Great War and the Culture of the New Negro (2008).
