While I did win a copy of this book though the Early Reviewers give-away. it was never recieved. However, I did subsequently purchase a copy of it through Doubleday's "The Good Cook" book club.
This book offers a good selection of recipes, as well as commentary on Amish life, customs, religion, and their outlook on what food is. The book has a great number of quality pictures to illustrate Amish practices and life.

While the depth of the recipes is not great, this is a good introduction of Amish cooking.… (mehr)

I received an advance copy of this book. At first I was excited, as the title implies lots of recipes for delicious pies and stews made from fresh ingredients. What it actually is is a collection of nasty recipes loaded with canned and processed ingredients that I would never make for my family, let alone allow them to eat (Velveeta, Miracle Whip and salty canned soup, anyone? Disgusting!) accompanied by preachy, holier-than-thou stories about the author's Amish faith and lifestyle. None of it is appealing. I had no idea the Amish are so fond of processed foods - the recipes are really incongruous with the idea of wholesome, fresh cooking. This one won't be staying on my shelves.… (mehr)
