: vancouver, canada, journalist, private-investigators, murder, suspense, white-slavery

Charity lives on a houseboat in Vancouver, is a freelance journalist and private investigator, gets into trouble a lot, and has a few very good quirky friends. Val is a teenaged orphan needing to find her missing sister, and both of them are in the trade. Then there is the murdered guy, the Chinese dealers who work the trade, and a whole lot more. A very good read!
I got the Whispersync on the cheap courtesy of Book Gorilla.
Susan Marlowe is really great as she narrates this one.

Fantastic! A straight up edge of the seat read. Taken to Vancouver we discover the underbelly of society as we ride along with Charity Deacon. Charity doesn't stop until she gets all the answers...no matter what it takes.

Charity Deacon is a private investigator and occasional free-lance journalist in present-day Vancouver. One night, she witnesses a motor vehicle accident downtown (with a fatality). Amid all the hubbub of police, ambulance personnel, and gawkers wanting to record it all on their smartphones, Charity sees two Asian men standing off to the side. It's almost as if they are making sure that the accident went off without a hitch.

Charity asks her friends about them, and learns that they are part of the Chinese mafia. They are the sort of people who have no problem with killing anyone who gets too close. Even Hell's Angels are nervous and apprehensive around them.

Meantime, Charity is approached by Val, a teenage prostitute who hires to help find Val's sister, Emma, another prostitute, who has been missing for the past couple of days. Inquiries among the local prostitutes yield nothing. From one minute to the next, Val shows herself as a scared teenage girl whose parents are dead (murdered by the same Chinese mafia), or as a tough, streetwise veteran with enough attitude for ten people.

Charity's inquiries about the two Asian men get her a trip to the hospital, beaten up by one of them. It also gets her houseboat ransacked. Released from the hospital, but hardly recovered from the beating, Charity gets word of a shipment of trafficked Chinese women coming to a local warehouse. With Val outside as lookout, Charity hides herself inside the warehouse, looking for enough evidence to put the Asian men away for a long time. Does Charity succeed? Is Emma found?

This would make a really good movie. It has plenty of dirt, grime and action. This story is also very well done and easy to read.

As a first time Inn manager Nikki is doing well. Keeping to her plans, not so much. This is a nice, light, romantic read. Recommended.

I received a copy of this book from Librarything for an honest review.

This is a great second chance love story, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and read it start to finish at one time! The book does have some editing to do yet, but besides that, it is great (that is why I gave it 4 stars not 5). I hope to have a sequel written, as I would love to see what the future brings for Niki and Alex, as well as Max and Alicia!

The author writes a great story showing conflict with others and a romance that could bloom into something magical. It has great characters, some which are kinda shady but it makes for a fun read.

This was a fast paced, quick, sweet read. I loved it. I enjoyed the characters and the story. It is a second chances story which I love. I can't wait to read more from this author. The only trouble I had, is I wish there could have been more. It was a short story and I think I would have loved it even more if more of the story had been told.

3.5 stars

I enjoyed this book of second chances and learning to let go of the past to move forward by Author P.A. Wilson. It was a quick sweet story to read. I loved the characters and absolutely feel in love with the town of Riverton. The description that the author uses to describe the Inn, the town and the folks in town, makes me want my own Riverton to go and visit.

Niki must learn to move on after losing a job that she loved. So she sets off to a new town to start over. She takes a leap of faith on a friend to help her get back on her feet. She is going to be the manager of the Alice Street Inn in the quiet little town of Riverton.

Alex just wants to get the Inn up and running again so he can sell it. He is ready to leave the town that holds so many memories for him behind and not look back. When he meets the new manager of the Inn, they seem to have different visions of what needs to happen at the Inn.

As Niki and Alex have to learn to compromise, the pull between the two of them is there and growing stronger. Will they give in or learn to go the other way?

When the past continues to consume Niki, she will have to deal with this face to face. But will the past go away quietly? Or will Alex learn the truth and turn his back on her? Although Alex has secrets from his past that he will have to let go of also.

I look forward to reading more by Author P.A. Wilson.

Monique Duchesne has lived her life in two halves…the half that happened before and after the murder of her mother followed by her father’s suicide. She makes her living singing in a jazz club at night and leading historical tour groups when not singing. She has issues with trust and relationships and also has a brother who is an addict. After a violent murder takes place in her apartment building her life is turned upside down. She is unable to trust the police to solve the murder so undertakes the task herself. Two more murders, some sleuthing and personal threats along with kidnapping and pain occur before the book ends. This book was a gift to me through LibraryThing’s giveaway program. It is very well written, well developed and interesting. I am not sure I would have been as willing as Monique was to put her life on the line but it did make for fascinating reading.
