Since 2002, Chinese artist Miao Xiaochun began to create mural scale photographs, and 9 of which were shown in the solo exhibition held at Walsh Gallery in Chicago in late 2004. In each photograph of a contemporary scenario, there is an ancient Chinese scholar in the artist's own likeness, whose presence is used to raise issues and set up contrasts between 'past and present', 'east and west', and 'traditional and contemporary culture'.
There is a close connection between the format of traditional Chinese handscroll/hanging scroll paintings and that of these photographs. Like the scroll paintings, there is no single focal point in Miao's photographs. Instead, the audience is faced with multiple scenes weaved together by Miao, and according to the artist, this is a more truthful representation of the contemporary society.
