What one has here is a good nuts-and-bolts examination of the contribution of the PRC to turning a Ho Chi Minh's guerrilla force into a good regular army, with the emphasis being on the defeat of the French. Li does range rather wider than that, but the events of the 1950s are why you're reading this monograph. ( )
