Lädt ... Deadlocked: A True Blood Novel (Sookie Stackhouse Book 12) (2012. Auflage)von Charlaine Harris (Autor)This one wasn't quite as bad as #11, but I still don't like the way this series is going. I'll keep reading because I'm invested in the series, but it's just not that exciting anymore. I love long series as long as there is an actual consistant story, like J.D. Robb's In Death series. I would also say LKH's Anita Blake series, but that one has pretty much derailed as well. Deadlocked 4 Stars Much better than the last couple of books. The characters develop in more realistic directions; the various plot threads merge more cohesively, and the hints at Sookie's romantic future begin to bear fruit. Let's start with the characters: Apologies to all the Eric fans out there, but I never really bought into the whole "a vampire can change for the love of a good woman" spiel - vampires do not change their fangs! Eric returns to his true vampiric nature and chooses political power over love - no surprise there! There is closure for Sookie's other exes as well. Alcide forgets his ridiculous actions in the last book and cements his leadership of the pack; Bill reiterates his love for Sookie, but acknowledges that their romance is in the past, and Quinn reaffirms that Sookie's choice of cutting him loose was the right one. The mystery of who is responsible for the dead girl on Eric's lawn has some interesting twists and turns, and ultimately comes together quite smoothly while wrapping up all the fae, werewolf and vampire loose ends in a very tidy bow. Sookie finally gets to use the Cluviel D'or and her choice of recipient is obviously prophetic. This particular romance has taken way too long to materialize. Hopefully, Harris won't screw it up in the last book. I'm surprised I ended up rating this so highly, but I actually did like this one. It was worlds better than the last couple of books; I had gotten to a point when I wasn't even sure I'd finish the series, but now I'm looking forward to next (and final) book. The key might have been to take a long break from Sookie and her adventures. I didn't pick this up until it had been out for about a year. Listening to the audio version was good too-I liked the reader a lot. Sookie was in good form in this one-finally saying no to people and making strong decisions. Her choices in this book made a lot more sense than the ones in the last book. It does get a bit tiresome to hear about her putting on her makeup and checking her email and so on, but I think that's there to show how Sookie has come to value the human aspects of her life. The more her life is spun out of control by the supernatural world, the more desperately she clings to the mundane. Harris focused on Eric's less agreeable qualities in this book and the last, but I don't think what she did was inconsistent with the character. I'm glad I didn't give up on these. Deadlocked made for an enjoyable work commute the past couple weeks, and it restored my confidence in Charlaine Harris that she'll be able to pull off a good finale for the series. Again, I think I enjoy these books now mostly because of the audiobook format, and also because the precision and neatness of Sookie's day to day life fulfills some sort of OCD need on my part. Prediction: This is the first Sookie stack house novel I have read, although I have been a long time fan of the tv series. I found this book easy to read and enjoyable, but ultimately one dimensional. The characters could have been given more depth, and Sookie is just so bloody nice all the time!! I like my heroines with a little more nasty in them! The plot was decent, easy to pick up, and moved quickly. Overall I would recommend this book as the kind you take on holidays to read at the beach when you don't want to think too hard or contemplate characters' traits. Enjoyable but forgettable. Having watched friends and loved ones marry, have children, and lead reasonably normal lives, at least for the most part, Sookie has often wondered what it would be like to have those things for herself. Yes, technically she is married to Eric, but a marriage to a vampire is not exactly legal, nor ideal when you only get to see your husband for a few hours a couple of nights a week. Not too mention the added stress of a vampire Queen out to claim your husband for her own. But, as always, Sookie has other matters to tend to. Eric has been framed for a murder she is not entirely sure he is innocent off, having caught him feeding from the victim only minutes before her murdered body was found. The fae left behind on this side are becoming increasingly restless and dangerous, not just to each other but the wider population. There are also complications with the weres, or at least one were in particular who would like to see the end of Sookie. Then there is the cluviel dor. Deadlocked sees Sookie trapped between a rock and a hard place. While it is true the fae cannot lie that does not mean they cannot deceive and being family the betrayal will cut deep. Meanwhile her relationship with Eric is strained at best and while both are looking to the other for an act that will prove their love, neither are willing to act themselves. However the sacrifice Sookie makes for love is not the one anyone would have expected and despite how much she cares, in the end love will break her heart. I always enjoy it when I get to return to Bon Temps! While this isn't my favorite installment, I still enjoyed reading it. My favorite part about this series is Sookie. I find her very relatable despite the fact that she dates vampires and has to deal with faeries and other supernatural beings! I like the ending of this book...can't wait to see how it plays out! If it weren't for Harris giving her readers a nice little wrap up at the very end of the book, I'd have thought nothing major had happened. She gives a nice little tl;dr wrap up in the last few pages. Probably my least favorite of all. Makes me a little concerned about the grand finale - the 13th and final book in 2013. While this book was an improvement from the last two, it was still boring. Half the time is spent explaining events or characters from previous books (at least she finally stopped explaining that Sookie can't hear vampires) and the other half is Sookie being pissed off and broody. She expects Eric to choose her and show his undying love for her, yet she is unwilling to give him a call? And every time she sees him she ends up walking out or sending him on his way. Was she really surprised when he wanted her to make the bold gesture of love? Eric deserved an actual send off and an actual conversation with Sookie. Harris did him dirty and I can't forgive that because he has become such a constant character in the books. Jannalynn got a better ending than our boy Eric, and that is simply wrong. Honestly because the last two books were so slow and this one was so frustratingly boring (until the end), I don't want to read the next book. I wish that I would have saved myself some time and only read up until book 6 and then just read summaries of the rest. When I got my hands on Deadlocked recently I was as happy as a fat girl with cake, I mean... YAY! New True Blood book, new Sookie and Eric romance stuff... YAY! But then I started reading it and I immediately got the feeling that Charlaine Harris no longer felt as involved with her characters as usual... No sex, no proper point to it all, no nothin'. What kind of bugged me the most is the fact that Eric wasn't Eric at all. He seemed to be some evil doppelgänger that took over the real Eric's life. Of course, all Truebies would probably think WTF at that point (especially in the way he treats Sookie lately). This book was so much weaker than the previous ones and it was so out of character that I'm actually a little hesitant to buy the next book. What's more is that you have to pay $16 for a kindle copy that's hardly worth the quality of the previous books in the series? Hell no. I don't often rant about books, but this was just one big let down and it's a damn shame. Maybe it's just me though. I don't know, I read all of the books in a week and I just got a major let down from Deadlock. Perhaps Harris needs to take a break and rekindle her love for the series, before she continues writing it. With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it's the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman's front yard--especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank. Now, it's up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl's fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who's out to make Sookie's world come crashing down. (summary from ISBN 0575096586) Although I’m sorry that this series is coming to an end, these last few books in the series are not as well-written or entertaining as the earlier ones. |
