I highly recommend the great photos by Alan Lomax and the short biography of Lomax in The Southern Journey of Alan Lomax: Words, Photographs, and Music by Tom Piazza. My wife bought it for me as an anniversary present. The book includes a CD of some of the music Lomax recorded during the 1959 trip through the American south that the book chronicles.
