Lamorinda Reads

The first ever Lamorinda Reads will begin September 4, 2007and run through October 25. For this exciting program, the cities have chosen as their first book Thomas Steinbeck's Down to a Soundless Sea. Written by John Steinbeck's son, Down to a Soundless Sea is a collection of short stories about life in Monterey County, California from the turn of the century through the 1930s. In seven stories, Steinbeck traces the fates and dreams of an eccentric cast of characters, from sailors and ranchers, to doctors and immigrants—as each struggles to carve out a living in the often inhospitable environment of rocky cliffs, crashing surf, and rough patches of land along the California coast and the Big Sur.As part of the celebration for Lamorinda Reads, all three libraries will be hosting fun programs and events throughout the month of September. These programs will include lectures, book discussions, oral renditions of Steinbeck's work, visits from some of California's native animals, and more. Check the programs pages for Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda to see a full listing of all the Lamorinda Reads programs.

The culminating event will be at the Orinda Library Auditorium on October 25, during which residents of Lamorinda are invited to meet Thomas Steinbeck and hear him discuss his life and work.
