Someone in the Sustainability group pointed to this article:

There was much evidence at the Café that others are working on this issue as well. Let's talk about our garbage, both at home and outside of the home.

"I (...) began bringing my own bags and jars to fill with bulk products at the supermarket. "

At least here in Finland, that is not possible because (I'm not sure what the right English terms are) hygiene legislation prevents it: who is liable if the foodstuff causes illness? Was it the food that was contaminated, or the customer's own container? And does she not order things off the Internet? Orders come in boxes.

I try to buy local, except for books, which I do buy online.

I just tried an experiment at a fast food restaurant. I requested they put my order in a bowl that I provided and will take home and wash. I brought my own flatware and cloth napkin as well. They had no problem at all putting the food - chili fries - in my bowl. No single use containers were used in this meal.
