Previously, I have made a post about a problem I am facing with my crowdfunding campaign. And that's figuring out what sort of gift I should thank my donors with. At first, I considered giving away free copies of my book, but after thinking long and hard about this, I decided that giving away free books would overwhelm me financially.

Because based on the cost estimates I have received so far, I would require S$4790. If I want to give a free copy of my book for every S$10 donated, I may have to come up with around 400 envelopes and the postage cost for delivering around 400 copies of my book.

I have to scrap that idea. BUT, at the same time, I can't expect people to give something in return for nothing. I am not crowdfunding for a political or religious cause after all.

So here'a an idea I thought of as an alternative to the give-away-free-books idea.
For a minimum donation of 10 dollars, the donor's name will be included on a special Thank You page in my book. And so, anyone who buys a copy of my book will be able to see who are the contributors who helped me make Guards Gone Wild! a reality. And the names will stay in my book, even in future print runs.

In addition to getting listed in my book as an honoured contributor, a minimum donation of 10 dollars will also get you a limited edition Guards Gone Wild! postcard with a personal Thank You message written by me.

So what do you think of my idea?

Also, feel free to come up with suggestions.

What else can I do to encourage donors to give more than $10? Should I ask overseas donors for a minimum sum of $S12, to cover postage?

And should I announce that for every extra S$10 donated, on top of the minimum donation, you can get another free postcard? Would it make this crowdfunding seem crass or would it encourage people to donate more?

Your suggestions and opinions are welcomed.

I think the first thing you need to consider is your audience. To whom are you planning to aim this crowd-funding campaign? Once you've figured that out, you'll be in a better position to determine what is likely to attract those people to donate.

To be brutally honest with you, random strangers are extremely unlikely to give you money to publish your book. I, and most people I know, participate in these campaigns only when it is a cause we support, or we know the person behind the campaign or are already familiar with her work.

So unless you are aiming at friends and family, a crowd-funded publication is unlikely to work.

Also being brutally honest, I would not fund a book because I would get my name in it, nor because I would get a free postcard. Like >2 lilithcat:, I would only fund something which I really felt was worth funding, and in that case I would not expect any free gift.

But I have no experience of the dynamics of crowd funding, so others might think differently.
