No books. Just handed down tales..XIT Ranch, Spikes-Gholson Feud (I'm a Gholson), etc. Planned to be a lurker here.

Welcome, Opinicus! I'm glad someone joined the group. I should really invite some people, but haven't got around to it yet. Feel free to send some invitations, if you like. What part of Texas are the Gholsons from? The Spikes-Gholson Feud definitely qualifies as obscure--and sounds very intriguing.

Gholson, TX
:-)
Also (hold on, while I check my genealogy--Don't have anything laying around, so I have to go by my gen links)
TX Books, available on these links, too
Gholson Road The author is a cousin. The man in the picture referred to as Frank is Benjamin Franklin Gholson, he and his brother Samual Sullivan (Col. Sam) Gholson were TX Rangers, and Ranchers. Col Sam is my gggrandfather. (I think that's how many greats) by his wife Maggie, who was raised by Caroline Hart of the Hart Ranch. Lot's more stories there, in one of the books that's available on the internet.
Fort Tours Website: Fight of B. F. Gholson and Others in 1857 Fort Tours site is fun to read.
Counties they lived in are: Parker, Palo Pinto, Tarrant, etc
That's my mom's side. My dad's side: GGrandfather worked a ranch for awhile, when he moved out to TX from VA, owned by his brother in Collingsworth County, that is still run by the family.

I checked your cousin's website. Her book looks interesting. I grew up in Denton County and heard a lot about Cynthia Parker when I was a kid.
5Lunawhimsy
I heard they made a movie about it (Cynthia Ann Parker) staring John Wayne!

I've just mooched Herman Lehmann's Nine Years Among the Indians 1870-1879. He's the German immigrant from Fredericksburg who was kidnapped by Apaches when he was 11. I haven't had a chance to read very far yet, but it looks like he got to know Cynthia's son Quanah Parker. I'm looking forward to reading more.

Mark your calendar! 2007's huge annual Friends of the Houston Public Library book sale is April 20-22 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Sunday is "bag day" -- $10 for whatever you can cram into a brown paper shopping bag (to be provided by Fiesta).

Howdy all.
found this group looking for Texas LT'ers. I also have a very specialized interest in Texas History. I am a descendant of the Wynne family, an East Texas (Wills Point, Kaufman and originally out by Jefferson and Marshall) law, oil, and cattle family. I do most of my research online and from family tales, but Yet Another Glory by Margaret Wynne Harrison (no touchstone) is one we pass down through the generations. It is the story of my family in my great grandfather's day. the author was his younger sister. My interest is sporadic at best, but I wanted to drop in and say hi! On my wish list is Life on Matagorda Island (also no touchstone so I linked to Amazon)
I am a native Dallasite, currently living north of the metroplex

Welcome to the Texas History group, mi2starsfan. I'll have to keep an eye out for Yet Another Glory -- it's probably obtainable through interlibrary loan. I love family histories of that type. Law, oil and cattle is a pretty basic Texas combination!

When it comes to the Herman Lehmann narrative, I much prefer A. C. Greene's The Last Captive. Greene sorts through the various published and unpublished versions of Lehmann's story, sorts out the likely-true parts from the accretions, and deftly edits it together into a readable book that doesn't do violence to Lehmann's own story.

Thanks, Marchbanks. I'll have to put this on my TBR list. I enjoy well-researched history about individual lives.

I researched the Wynne family long ago in connecting them to the Thomas Jefferson family. See web pages: www.tjheritage.org and www.angelfire.com/va/TJTruth for my research in the Jefferson-Hemings DNA tests. NO proof that Thomas Jefferson fathered ANY slave child.........read the Scholars Commission Report (13 top professors).

The Gholson family lived at one time in the old Field Jefferson (Thomas Jefferson's first cousin) home above Lake Gaston (Roanoke River) in Mecklenburg Co., Va. In searching the Jeffersons we came across a cemetery of Gholsons on top of the hill under some large trees.

Adding links for anyone who wants to check out herbar's Jefferson-Hemings research: Thomas Jefferson Heritage Society and Thomas Jefferson DNA Study. Warning: the DNA website comes with some annoying pop-up ads.
