Why do you think the Americans fired on The Oregon? Was this the right think to do?

Because what they were seeing on their radar didn't make sense with the visual report. Also, they'd just lost a pilot and aircraft and Oregon was the only ship out there -- they were naturally suspect

Yes. They looked like a threat and refused to turn around.

They saw a threat and acted on it. It was their orders and their duty. I wondered why Overholt didn't react faster in tell the Navy to back down? It's almost as the Oregon and it's crew were dispensable to him.

I suppose having given the Oregon the warning, the Navy had to follow up...
I also suppose it was the right thing to do - the Navy was trying to contain a situation.
