How could the book have been improved?

1. the story was so convoluted and there were so many holes/references to earlier cases that we didn't know about that it made it hard to follow the actual investigation at times. Maybe it would have been cleaner if we'd started with the series in which Chase was first introduced.
2. Make the characters more likable - I never liked either Chase or Martinez

The story lacked any sort of cohesion. There was no real explanation of how Martinez physically accomplished all the crimes. The motive was far fetched. The characters were confusing and dislikable. How was Chase even recruited as an FBI agent. She became addicted to heroin on the job. She should have been fired. The paranormal aspect was too unbelievable to me.

I'm a big fan of damaged heroines in thrillers. Some of the very best are Tracy Crosswhite by Robert Dugoni, Kim Stone by Angela Marsons and, of course, the Queen of Damaged Detectives, Eve Dallas by J. D. Robb. There are so many better ones than Chase Adams.

The book needed more in-depth information and more suspects. I didn't really like the paranormal as it makes it too easy for the author and the character to solve the crime. I wanted more clues to be investigated. To me the book is a total mess and he needs to spend more time and stop cranking them out so fast. His books are good for people who read 1 or 2 books a month but for some of us who read many books a month, they don't compare to some of the authors that we read.

He should find an editor who knows his job and put a bit more effort into his books.

>5 EadieB: if I read only one book a month I would want it to be a really good one...

>6 sushicat: His rating on Amazon is 4.5 and on Goodreads it is 3.75. So either the reviewers are his relatives or they don't read enough good mysteries to know that this book is not that good.

>7 EadieB: When you told us about how he produces his book I thought that explains it all...

Better editing, obviously, but apart from that, I think the man has achieved what he set out to do. He is self-published (I believe) and hasn't sunk without a trace, in fact he has a decent following, so why should he bother to change his MO?
