Did Joesbury have the right to tell Lacey to not go swimming?

I don't see anything wrong with him telling her that as that river should not be a place to swim but he used the excuse that he loved her and didn't want her swimming in the Thames.

He can tell her not to do things all he wants - we all know she's going to do whatever she wants. However, the fact that he's more familiar with the river and its dangers should carry some weight with her

He's been around the river his whole life and knows the dangers. She's going to do it anyway and he knows it.

He knows that that's not the safest place to be swimming. I think he was only concerned for her well being.

I think it came from a position of caring. He’s entitled to his opinion. Lacey will do what she wants, whether that’s to comply or defy him.
