Quest to Read Banned Books

This year, my reading challenge includes trying to read as many banned books as possible. I have a few lists that I have copied to get to as many titles as I can. First and foremost, I do not believe in banning books. I think that is a slippery slope and will never ban books in my home. However, there are some that I have read recently that will forever be banned from my eyes and ears again. This ban only applies to my own eyes and ears. Whew. What are some banned books that you can see why people would want them gone?

I think with every book that's challenged, made illegal, or destroyed with malice, a would-be book banner is likely attempting to protect other people. There are typically some good intentions behind the acts.

Unfortunately, the reasoning for their actions might not only be seriously faulty but harmful to the society they tell themselves they protect by getting rid of books meant for public distribution. Trying to protect others who are uninterested in the "protection" reduces the opportunities for the other people to do what they want. Those who would have chosen to read the banned books might no longer be able to protect themselves from threats not understood by the person who interfered.

That's the problem. I honestly despise some books, wishing they'd disappear, but I can't know for sure they aren't helpful in personal situations I don't understand. One person's deplorable piece of trash is another person's wonderful treasure that provides insight for self-improvement. So I can only choose for myself and the people who I'm directly responsible for (and hopefully know well).
