I live in Houma, La, about 60 miles southwest of NOLA. We're in our second cycle of the Big Read, about to start our third. Our book was To Kill a Mockingbird, and currently we are reading A Lesson Before Dying by Louisiana native Ernest Gaines. I was able to meet him last month....very nice and gracious individual.

Anywho- now that folks here are acclimated to the program, we're throwing them to Fahrenheit 451. Our community is pretty conservative, but we plan on reeling them in with chilly cook-offs and involvement from our fire departments.

Some nifty things we've done already is throw books and readers' guides off Mardi Gras floats (well, it was during the Christmas parade, but we used Mardi Gras floats). Folks got a kick out of it! We plan to do it again this year for Halloween, Christmas, and Mardi Gras.

Ciao,
Lauren.

Lauren,

thanks for the message. There are all kinds of big reads and other reads going on here in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have gotten the reading list off of the NEA web site for the big read and have been going through the books. I is amazing all of the books that i have never read until now. To Kill a Mocking Bird and Fahrenheit 451 are two of my favorites. I also went back and rewatched the movie for Fahrenheit 451, vary interesting visual images.
