A snowstorm has hit the Ukrainian village of Dikank, where the blacksmith Wakula is unhappily in love with Oksana, who will only marry him if he gets her the Tsarina's golden shoes. Jake Heggie: Dead Man Walking.

Winning universal critical acclaim at its premiered in 2000, American composer Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking is the most widely performed opera of the last two decades. With a libretto by Terence McNally, it's an adaptation of the powerful memoir by Sister Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun and anti-death-penalty activist from New Orleans. Joseph De Rocher is a convicted murderer on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary and Sister Helen reluctantly becomes his spiritual advisor. As their relationship develops, Sister Helen is able to bring a kind of peace to De Rocher and his family, and persuades him to acknowledge his guilt. Finally, when the time comes, she is there to support him at the hour of his death. Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the Met's dynamic music director, conducts a cast including Latonia Moore, Joyce DiDonato and Ryan McKinny, and continues to make good his pledge to refresh the repertoire and bring new audiences to the august institution. This evening's programme marks both Mozart's birthday and the 50th anniversary year of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra with a recording from 1996 of Don Giovanni, one of Mozart's most celebrated works, conducted by Charles Mackerras. Bo Skovhus leads the stellar cast as the legendary bad boy Don Giovanni, who hopes his womanising ways can continue unchecked - until he meets the ghost of the man he kills. Martin Handley presents a Royal Opera House production of Richard Strauss's Elektra, based on Sophocles's play of the same name. Determined to honour her father King Agamemnon and longing to avenge his murder by her mother Klytämnestra and the queen's lover Aegisth, Elektra becomes increasingly unkempt, desperate and unhinged. Elektra tells the now guilt-wracked Klytämnestra that she will die a violent death, but then hears the devastating news that her brother Orest is dead. However, a mysterious stranger appears. Antonio Pappano conducts a stellar international cast, including Ausrine Stundyte in the title role and Karita Mattila as her murderous mother Klytämnestra. Debussy: Pelléas et Mélisande.

A production of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande starring Bernard Richter and Patricia Petibon, recorded at the Bela Bartok National Concert Hall in Budapest last September. In a forest in the vaguely medieval kingdom of Allemonde, Prince Golaud finds a mysterious young woman weeping by a fountain. They are soon married, but six months later Golaud knows little more about Mélisande than at their first meeting. When she meets Golaud's half-brother Pelléas they fall in love and the tragic end of the story is inexorably set. Ivan Fischer is both conductor and director of this critically acclaimed production, with he and the orchestra wearing cloaks of leaves, the stage a forest with singers, players and conductor among the trees. Dido and Aeneas, The Fairy Queen.

Hannah French introduces performances of two Purcell operas, with William Christie conducting Les Arts Florissants. The programme opens with Dido and Aeneas recorded in the Notre-Dame Basilica at the International Baroque and Romantic Opera Festival in Beaune last year. Mezzo Helen Charlston stars as the lovelorn Dido, ending in the heart-stoppingly beautiful lament. The second part of the evening's broadcast is devoted to The Fairy Queen, his semi-opera in five acts adapted from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded last year at the Utrecht Early Music Festival. The Fairy Queen has some of Purcell's finest theatre music, some slapstick elements contrasting with more sublime and magical moments. Donald Macleod presents a production of Wagner's The Flying Dutchman recorded at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, starring Bryn Terfel in the title role, with Elisabet Strid as Senta. Forced by a terrible storm to anchor his ship in an unfamiliar bay, Captain Daland instructs his steersman to keep watch, but he falls asleep at his post. A strange ship moors alongside, and its captain, the Flying Dutchman of seafaring legend, comes aboard. He is a cursed man, doomed to sail the seas forever, unless he finds a woman who will be faithful unto death. When the Dutchman discovers that Daland has a daughter, he asks if he can marry her, in exchange for all his wealth. Wagner: The Flying Dutchman. Georgia Mann presents a Munich Opera production of Handel's Semele, starring soprano Brenda Rae in the title role and tenor Michael Spyres as her lover Jupiter. Semele is supposed to be marrying Athamas, but is infatuated by her lover Jupiter, king of the gods. To halt the plans, Jupiter turns himself into a giant eagle to carry Semele off to a mountaintop palace, guarded by dragons who never sleep. But Jupiter's wife Juno is furious and begins plotting her revenge. Georgia is joined by Suzanne Aspden from the University of Oxford to discuss Handel's score.
