My Ghost Story of the Week "From the Dead"

If there's one good thing about the Tales of Mystery & the Supernatural Series from Wordsworth Editions (and there are many more than one), it's the chance to find some amazing story or author. Maybe I've never heard of them, or tried them once and gave up.
In this case, I thought Edith Nesbit was a kids book author (like I thought Edith Wharton never wrote supernatural fiction). I'd never picked up any of her stuff until buying The Power of Darkness - Tales of Terror collection.
"..if I had said, 'Yes, even from the grave, my darling - from hell itself,come back, come back to me!'...I shrank from her - I feared her - I would not take her to my heart. And now she will not come to me any more."
Very pulpy and overwrought, but there is something in it, compelling me to read it twice in two days. Anyone else have a good story to recommend?

A few weeks ago I read "The Beckoning Fair One" by Oliver Onions in Dover's The Collected Ghost Stories of Oliver Onions, and thought it was a pretty well constructed story.

The Wordsworth editions are wonderful. I haven't picked up the Nesbit yet, but I recently received the Henry James ghost stories, and am happy to have his supernatural stories all tidy in one place.

We have been discussing the American author W.C. Morrow in another group. I thought I'd recommend his story "His Unconquerable Enemy" over here. While not a ghost story, it is one of the strangest and most grotesque stories I've read in quite a while. The story can be accessed online.

Cool! I'll check it out. Dover also published a standalone version of "Beckoning" - I'd love to pick up a copy of Onions' collected stories.

Think "The Beckoning Fair One" is Ace! Found it in the hardback collection "Widdershins" by Onions, many years ago. Has anyone read How Love came to Professor Guildea by Robert Hichens or Pages from a Young Girl's Diary by Robert Aickman
