- The Paul Mellon Centre Library, Archives and Photo Archive are open by prior appointment.
The Paul Mellon Centre library covers British painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, architecture and garden history from the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth century, as well as eighteenth-century British decorative arts. Our collections on the British country house and the eighteenth-century Grand Tour are particularly strong.
The Centre houses the working papers of some distinguished historians of British art and architecture, including Dr Robert Raines' papers on foreign artists working in England in the eighteenth century.
We also have an extensive archive relating to British and Irish visitors to Italy in the eighteenth century, compiled over thirty years by Sir Brinsley Ford, and edited by John Ingamells to create A Dictionary of British and Irish Travellers in Italy 1701-1800 (click here to download). We are currently taking part in an exciting project which will produce an on-line resource of original and secondary material about the Grand Tour. - Hinzugefügt von
