"Quincy was a little red horse. His coat was the color of a new penny. His mane and tail were long and shiny. His eye were soft and brown. On his nose was a long white blaze."

And so begins Camille Matthews' simple narrative about the experiences and feelings of a horse who changes owners and homes. Quincy feels badly when his people stop coming to see him, but happy and proud when a strange woman takes him for a ride. But although he enjoys showing his stuff, he isn't sure what to make of his subsequent move to a new home, especially when he notices that some of the other horses in the stables are always winning ribbons. Fortunately, a wise old horse named Beau helps him to find his feet...

With short sentences, and simple words, Quincy Finds a New Home would make an excellent beginning reader, particularly for the horse-mad child. Young riders, in particular, will benefit from this presentation of the horse's perspective on changing homes and people. Michelle Black's illustrations, done in oil, highlight the beauty and dignity of of the equine form. I particularly liked her close-up portraits of Quincy and Beau. All in all, an appealing picture-book, ideal for young horse-lovers! ( )

If you ever had to move from one house to another, how did you feel? Quincy is a little horse who is the color of a new penny. He lives on a farm with a red barn and loves to ride the trails in the forest with the owner of the farm and his children. When spring comes, Quincy waits for someone to put on his saddle, but no one comes except the neighbor man to fill Quincy’s water tank. Finally a man and a woman come with a white horse trailer to tell Quincy that he has a new owner and a new home. They take him to a large barn with many stalls where he makes friends with another horse named Beau. This barn has an outdoor arena that is full of jumps. Quincy watches other horses jump the jumps and win lots of ribbons. But he doesn’t know how to jump jumps or win ribbons. What is he going to do?
Horses can be extremely gorgeous creatures, and most children dearly love them. Author Camille Matthews uses a horse to tell an endearing story about change and growth that is both exciting and reassuring for youngsters, who will also enjoy looking at the striking, full-page oil paintings by illustrator Michelle Black. Between the two, Camille and Michelle have done just about everything with horses but say that the creation of the Quincy the Horse series is their favorite project. Quincy Finds a New Home, which was a 2010 Mom’s Choice Gold Award recipient, is a tale not just of horses but also of love, security, and wisdom. I found it quite a delightful book. ( )
