One has to take this book with a slight grain of salt, in that Warlimont himself was tried, and convicted, as a war criminal for his role in the events described in the book (he had been freed for some years by the time the book came out). There's a great deal of effort, at one point, expended in distancing himself from the notorious "Commissar Order," and even suggesting that he helped water it down. That said, this is an interesting insight into the chaos and lack of planning and organization at Hitler's headquarters, to the benefit of probably quite a few nations in the world. Does get a bit repetitive at times, and as I've noted, a bit self-justifying. Still, an interesting read. ( ) Interesting insider's view of the chaos that existed in Germany's military command structure in WWII. Multiple redundant agencies were set up to compete against each other, with the only 'winner' in this chaos being Hitler himself. A strong contrast to the Allied command structure, or even Stalin's. Some of the most interesting portions were the transcriptions of actual military conferences. Fascinating stuff. A good book overall. Zeige 3 von 3 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
Warlimont, deputy chief of operations for the OKW from 1939 to 1944, was at the centre of power during one of history's most shattering periods. His account of World War II tells the story of men whom the fates tempted and then destroyed. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
