Into the bargain it discusses the difference between the two major types of feudal landholding...the Benefice...which was what happened in England due to william the Conqueror owning everything after the battle of Hastings, and Alloid , the system where groups of nobles all of whom owned their land, gathered to elect one of their members as king. The British Isles benefited greatly from the benfice system for nobles could be moved from estate to estate or title to title, by the will or whim of the king. This central power over everything power was gradually transferred to parliament by a long struggle. The Allodial states were subjected to private war, continual rebellion, and greater oppression of the bulk of the population by the aristocracy, until the reforms instituted by the Napoleonic wars finally ended that system in western Europe. This handbook tries to explain the differences to the conduct of political and economic life in"The Empire" and tries pretty hard. It is a noble effort, and explains something of the general differences in violence in the two areas. The usual plates are of a high standard. In medieval Germany violence was accepted far more than in other kingdoms. Kings were recognised as guardians of order, but this had its limitations. Lords expected to use force to secure their rights or win an argument when peaceful methods were not sufficient. Christopher Gravett does a fine job of examining the organisation and campaigns of German medieval armies from 1000-1300, in a volume containing plenty of photographs and illustrations, including eight full page colour plates byGraham Turner.
