Went ahead and read this one, too, while I had the Poe book out. It’s been years since I’ve read it, and all the Vincent Price and other movie deviations I’ve seen in between confused me as to the original story, kind of like all the Dracula movies before I re-read Stoker’s original.

I do love the old, crumbling house, the mysterious illnesses of Roderick and Madeleine, and the sense of impending doom. Poe was such a gloomy guy! But I guess that’s the point. A good classic anyway.

The Murders in the Rue Morgue

Wanted to read this because it’s credited with being the “first” detective mystery. It’s a short story (well no, it’s actually “long fiction”, I think, maybe a novella), about two women who are found brutally murdered in their home, and with no way in or out, seemingly killed by someone with superhuman strength. One woman – the daughter, I think – is found shoved feet first up the chimney! The other is outside on the ground below, hair ripped out in clumps. Gruesome. The killer was – get this – an orangutan! One who had gone wild in caged fear and escaped its owner. I found it very sad, actually, and ended up not liking the story overall because of it. I don’t care for stories that involve animal suffering in any way. ( )
