Well worth it if you're looking for a deep, but not too academic, dive into a greater understanding of what makes 'Figaro' tick. ( ) Along with Lucy Beckett's "Parsifal", the best of the Cambridge Opera Handbooks -- certainly among those that I've read. My favorite sections are a careful description of the transformation of Beaumarchais' play into the Mozart/da Ponte opera, a solid summary of performance history, and, especially, a strikingly original commentary on why Mozart's version of the Classical style makes it so appropriate for opera buffa. I'm always startled when a "handbook", which I expect to be something of an anthology of received opinion, actually presents something novel -- at least novel to me. (Specialists in Mozart are probably shaking their heads at this point.) Zeige 2 von 2 keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

Le nozze di Figaro (1786) was Mozart's first mature opera buffa. It was also the first of his three major collaborations with the librettist Lorenzo da Ponte. Unlike Don Giovanni (1787) and Così fan tutte (1790), Figaro has few obvious problems, and even if it is not without flaws, it nevertheless contains a remarkable mixture of all those elements that go to produce a good opera: a sound plot, a well-structured text and fine music. This opera handbook examines the work from historical and musical perspectives, to set it in the context of Mozart's age. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
