I believe it is the third in a "series" that definitely does not need to be read in order (I have read only this one). 12-year-old Djuna and his new friend Ben (also ~12), along with their new adult-friend, lazy but brilliant news reporter Socker Furlong, set out to figure out what's really going on in the haunted mansion on Carpenter street. This story has plucky, smart, but realistically scared and amazed 12-year old boys, a Lassie-resembling smart dog to help them with their mystery solving, a green turtle (of course), and a few extra characters to make it all quite interesting. Although I figured out the "mystery" rather early on, I think kids will find this just confusing enough, just mysterious enough, just scary enough to keep them interested until the end. From vintage scholastic cover: "That house is haunted," the fat stranger tells Djuna and Bill. But the two boys don't scare easily. How they find out for themselves--and what they learn--make frontpage headlines! This eerie mystery thriller features a vanishing girl, a Spanish-speaking parrot, and a time-telling turtle--in a case that baffles even the Secret Service. From the flyleaf: "Empty?" exclaimed Mr. Firkins. "Certainly it's empty." But the two boys--Djuna and Ben Franklin--see lights behind the shuttered windows. When Djuna knocks the door opens and there stands a little girl. "Shut the door, Maria," shouts an angry voice. That's when Djuna lost Waterbury. Waterbury is a small green pet turtle. When the boys go back to rescue Waterbury they discover some strange clues--clues that lead to the solution of a case the Secret Service couldn't crack. To rescue a friend's pet turtle, Djuna must solve the riddle of a haunted house His new shoeshine box under his arm, boy-sleuth Djuna is looking for customers when he meets a young reporter named Socker Furlong. Socker assigns Djuna and copyboy Ben Franklin to investigate a haunted empty house. Djuna, Ben, and Ben's pet turtle are having a lot of fun creeping around outside--until the place turns out not to be so abandoned after all. Djuna sees people inside the house, and when he knocks, a young girl answers the door--only to slam it in his face. Djuna and Ben run for help and are halfway down the block when Ben notices that his turtle is missing. To get him back, they will have to crack the mystery of the haunted house, no matter what ghosts may stand in their way. Ellery Queen is one of the world's finest detectives, but his adventures are nothing compared to the Ellery Queen Jr. Mystery Stories. Join Queen's apprentice, Djuna, and his trusty Scottie, Champ, on adventures filled with danger, suspense, and thrills. Keine Bibliotheksbeschreibungen gefunden. |
