I think this would be a good book for a student that is proficient in reading in second grade. The age range for this book is 3-7 and the reading level is an L. There are bolded words, definitions, and pictures to help support the text and key ideas within the text. I would recommend this book because I think it could open up a lot of discussions whether that be habitats, nonfiction text features, and much more. I think the words and supports are appropriate for a proficient second grader. The DCI that is explored in this book is life science. The CCC that is explored in this book is structure and function and that relates to the book because it is about the ocean and the animals, coral, etc. that live in the ocean. ( )
