Six-Gun Justice . . . Smoke Jensen was the last mountain man and the quickest draw in the West. But he was tired of fighting every punk who wanted to make a reputation for himself, so he hung up his .45s. It Didn't Last Long . . . Like Jensen, the two Mexican gunfighters known as Carbone and Martine had put away their six-guns, married and turned to ranching down in Durango. Then they came up against an army of outlaws under a warlord who called himself Carvajal. That was when they called on Smoke Jensen. Smoke didn't waste a minute. When your friends called, you came running. Carvajal laughed when he heard that Smoke Jensen was on the way. After all, what could one man do? Contains mature themes. Smoke Jensen is once again answering the call for help from two friends he knew some time back, Carbone and Martine. The two friends are known as former pistoleers who hung up their guns, married, and settled down. Now, not only are their lives threatened but others in the area are too by a man who fancies himself a king and has the right to take what isn’t his whenever he chooses. The man who fancies himself as a reincarnation of former heroes from beyond the border is one named Carvajal. Carvajal draws men with less than stellar reputations and even men seeking a reputation, men who want to be rich and known as the one who killed Smoke Jensen.
What Smoke didn’t plan on when he answers the call for help is coming across a youngster by the name of Billy who has recently lost his mother, and his stepfather is a brutal man. Saddled now with a young man to care for and facing an unknown threat to his friends’ lives, Smoke must find a family who is willing to care for Billy whether Smoke comes back or not.
Sally Jensen may soon have her hands full, taking care of the youngster until Smoke returns to the Sugarloaf Ranch. Billy is a bright and resourceful lad for his age, but he is still in need of tempering his rash actions with wisdom. Sally is just the lady to help educate the lad if Billy is willing to take to heart the lessons he is being taught.
I enjoyed reading the book; it wasn’t my favorite, but it is a typical Smoke story that has you rooting for Smoke and his friends when they face inflated odds! I recommend getting the booklist of the series as well as other Johnstone books from the author’s website https://williamjohnstonebooks.com
Whether the books are read in order or not, each one takes the reader back to the wild west as well as the team of Smoke and Sally Jensen!
