This book was based on a TV series, which I never saw. But I was worried that it might not stand alone as a work. However, it was fascinating and interestingly written. It attempts to paint a picture of what life was like for the average man and woman in Britain at seven different periods going back to over 9,000 years ago. Whilst in many ways being honest about what we don't know, it nonetheless provides many insightful interpretations. ( )

A good introduction to the seven periods of British history the book distinguishes, serving as a useful taster for wider reading, especially the early chapters exploring less well known eras. Some discussion of the Celtic debate would have been useful though - Celts are not mentioned in the book at all. ( )
