"Haunted by memories of the Great War, failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate -- the Savoyard Plantation -- and the horrors that occurred there. At first their new life seems to be everything they wanted. But under the facade of summer socials and small town charm, there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice. It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of the Savoyard Plantation still stand. Where a long smoldering dept of blood has never been forgotten. Where it has been waiting for Frank Nichols..." --P. [4] of cover.… (mehr)

This would make a fantastic horror movie. It's got all the right era, atmosphere and attitude. It's vivid and loud.

For the book: Aside from some minor moments of languid southern sweat and bother in the first half of the book, it moves along at a brisk pace. It's perfect for a rocking chair read on the front porch in 90* weather.

Yeah, if you are done with it too, are you as happy as I am that the days of sparkly monsters are over? ( )

Super creepy and suspenseful. A werewolf story and very well done. Intelligent. ( )

Very well written, the words flow very well. This book, however, contains some triggers for some: racism, war, violence, harm to children. Be careful when reading. ( )

Failed academic Frank Nichols and his wife, Eudora, have arrived in the sleepy Georgia town of Whitbrow, where Frank hopes to write a history of his family's old estate-the Savoyard Plantation- and the horrors that occurred there. At first, the quaint, rural ways of their new neighbors seem to be everything they wanted. But there is an unspoken dread that the townsfolk have lived with for generations. A presence that demands sacrifice. It comes from the shadowy woods across the river, where the ruins of Savoyard still stand. Where a longstanding debt of blood has never been forgotten. A debt that has been waiting patiently for Frank Nichols's homecoming…

I listened to this on audiobook, and man, this narrator is awesome. Brought a lot of flavor to the book, and I was absolutely enraptured by it until it was over. I was also getting a kick out of the fact that they had fled from what is sort-of my home city, Ann Arbor, and that our protagonist had been a history professor at University of Michigan, where my husband is an alumni. Loved it.
