A novel of three generations, Ancestor Stones unravels the lives of four African women as they tell their stories and magical fables to their first generation British niece. Aminatta Forna weaves together the voices of generations of women - aunts, daughters and mothers - to capture an elusive sense of Africa, starting in a world poised on the cusp of great change and spanning a century. In tales of love, marriage, war and woman's subtle triumph, Serah, Mary, Hawa and Asana lift the past from their shoulders and hand it to their niece as a luminous treasure trove of memories, of lives lived, terrors faced and pleasures tasted. A grief-stricken chief spends a fortune to win back the love and freedom of an escaped bride whom he'd once captured as a slave; a young third wife struggles to find her place in the cold heart of her husband - and in doing so uncovers his household's old secrets; a daughter struggles to understand a seismic shift in belief as Islam displaces the old gods her mother still worships through the stones of her ancestors' spirits; a white 'moon shadow man' represents a terrifying apparition to a girl whose fortune changes overnight. Stretching across sensibilities, generations and continents, Ancestor Stones is a stunning novel of a nation, a family and the individual women whose stories explore different ways of seeing- how the past is understood through the filter of hindsight, how women come to see themselves through the eyes of others, and how stories ancient and new shape the world that we see.… (mehr)

“[A] certain giddiness had come over my aunts as if the time spent remembering the girls and women they once had been had invigorated the spirits. They'd lifted the past from their own shoulders and handed it to me. I didn't see it as a burden, not at all. Rather a treasure trove of memories, of lives lived and lessons learned, of terrors faced and pleasures tasted.” – Aminatta Forna, Ancestor Stones

Set in Sierra Leone, this book tells the stories of four women, half-sisters, as they relate significant events in their lives to their niece, Abie. The four women share the same father, who eventually had eleven wives. It takes place over the majority of the 20th century (1926-1999), as the country evolves through colonialism, civil war, and sovereignty. Abie travels from her current home in England to west Africa to her family’s coffee plantation, where she traces the family history through the lives of these four aunts.

The narrative is rich in details of the Sierra Leone’s culture and natural environment. It is a patchwork of various stories that provide an overall impression of the history and changes over time within the country from the female perspective. It occasionally feels fragmented due to the many shifts in perspectives and time periods. This is my second novel by Aminatta Forna and I am turning into an enthusiastic fan. Her writing style is richly textured with details while not losing sight of the larger picture.

A rich vignette of stories of four sisters growing up in western Africa in colonial and post-colonial days. Family tree an absolute necessity in relating one sister/mother/brother/daughter/son to another. Extremely interesting. ( )

139/2020. A collection of short stories, or a novel with five narrators, set mostly amongst the Temne in northern Sierra Leone, from 1926 to 1999, and following the lives of four women who are daughters of four of the eleven wives of a prosperous and very polygamous Muslim man. The autobiographical stories of these characters become a way of exploring Sierra Leonean history through the experiences of four differing women (although they are all born into what would be the hereditary landed gentry / upper middle class equivalent socioeconomic bracket and don't fall below home-owning middle class more than momentarily even during the civil war).

Motherhood: "She went, leaving behind everything, even her name. So I wrapped it in longing and kept it for her." ( )

Londra, luglio 2003.

I found this book stunning. Told through the lives of four women, sisters with the same father and different mothers, we see the phenomenal changes that occur in Sierra Leone through the twentieth century and into the early twenty-first century. We also see how the women make a place for themselves within the culture. ( )
