"The television show, Before the Game (Channel 10), is a light-hearted panel-based show about Australian Rules Football. One of the panelists, Peter Helliar, plays a character called Bryan Strauchan. The TV show shows a 2-3 minute 'documentary' of the character of Bryan Strauchan. Bryan Strauchan is a fictional character and the premise is that he was picked last by the Collingwood Football Club in the 2004 draft. This is all in humour - Bryan Strauchan is clearly never going to get a game with Collingwood. He's a hopeless, overweight, not very good footballer. But each week the 'documentary' shows Bryan 'training' with the Collingwood football team, 'mentoring' younger players, 'running' footy clinics with schools etc. Everyone else who appears in the documentary appears as themselves, including Eddie McGuire, Mick Malthouse and the entire Collingwood Football Club team as well as other AFL players and coaches (eg Terry Daniher, Rodney Eades). The entire 'documentary' is a comedy. The book is Bryan's autobiography. Therefore it does mention and discuss real people, especially players and staff from the Collingwood Football Club, but it is essentially a humorous take-off. 'Bryan' discusses growing up in Horsham, Victoria and playing football. He also discusses his multicultural heritage (he's half-Chinese, but the joke is that obviously he doesn't have one Chinese gene - Bryan is blond and blue-eyed). It's true that Bryan has his own AFL footy card and spoke at the Brownlow Award in 2006. He has become a cult figure in the AFL. His 'autobiography' is very much tongue in cheek, and contains Bryan's musings on all things Aussie Rules. Bryan is convinced he's a superstar, but he's clearly a dud. Nathan Buckley, captain of Collingwood Football Club, is writing the foreword. Blurb: Bryan Strauchan has captured the hearts of football fans across the country. From humble beginnings in Horsham, to being last pick in the 2004 AFL national draft, the aspiring superstar's daily struggle to make his debut with Collingwood has been graphically depicted, warts and all, on Network TEN's Before The Game. Despite his multicultural challenges (his mum is Chinese) and regional marginalisation, Strauchanie has achieved cult status in his two seasons with the Pies, getting his own official AFL footy card, making shopping centre appearances, hosting part of the Brownlow Medal count and appearing at the Grand Final pre-game entertainment. His battles are those of ordinary Australians: weight, fitness, meeting deadlines and generally finding the energy to get off the couch. This inspirational life story will include hints and tips on believing in yourself, motivational meditations, get fit quick schemes and previously unseen pictures of the superstar." -- Publisher.… (mehr)

The subject of this ‘autobiography’ of a rising Collingwood star is in fact a comedic character, known as ‘Strauchnie’, created by comedian Peter Helliar. Strauchanie believes he is an immensely talented player, a view shared only by Bryan Strauchan himself.
