Hans Augusto Rey and Margarete Elisabethe Waldstein nee Rey were born in Germany in 1898 and 1906, respectively. He served in World War I and then studied philosophy and natural science. She studied art. As Jews, they escaped the Nazis before the fall of Paris in 1940 carrying with them the manuscript for the first Curious George book.
