In Dream New Dreams, Jai Pausch shares her own story for the first time: her emotional journey from wife and mother to full-time caregiver, shuttling between her three young children and Randy's bedside as he sought treatment far from home; and then to widow and single parent, fighting to preserve a sense of stability for her family, while coping with her own grief and the challenges of running a household without a partner. Jai paints a vivid, honest portrait of a vital, challenging relationship between two strong people who faced a grim prognosis and the self-sacrificing decisions it often required. As she faced life without the husband she called her "magic man," Jai learned to make herself a priority to create a new life of hope and happiness--as she puts it, to "feel a spark of my own magic beginning to flicker." Dream New Dreams is a powerful story of grief, healing, and newfound independence. With advice artfully woven into an intimate, beautifully written narrative, Jai's story will inspire not only the legions of readers who made The Last Lecture a bestseller, but also those who are embarking on a journey of loss and renewal themselves.… (mehr)

I think this is a good book overall, but for me it was too broad and general. I wanted more detail on her day-to-day life, caring for her cancery husband and their children ages 4 1/2 years, 23 mos and 4 mos and I didn't need any of the chapters about how she coped after the fact, single parenting, getting back into the dating world, etc. ( )

I received this book as a first reads winner. I enjoyed this book very much. As a cancer survivor, it was interesting for me to see the other side, what the care giver goes through. I was never as bad as Randy was, but this type of book needed to be written. There is nothing in the medical field really to help the ones who have to help the ill and how to cope with their moods and needs. If you know someone going through this, give them the book. It might help them a little. ( )

This book was written by Jai Pausch, the wife of the late Randy Pausch who wrote the inspirational "The Last Lecture". Jai Pausch cared for her husband during his final days as well as raising their young children basically on her own. This book focuses mainly on the struggles of caregivers and the lack of support from society. It's interesting to hear the perspective of a caregiver and I agree that we need to make more resources available for them. However, instead of being an inspiring read most of the book sounds like one big complaint. I don't mean to diminish the hardship of caring for a loved one who is dying, which undoubtedly is one of the hardest things one can go through. I just wish this book had a more uplifting message instead of just leaving the reader feeling depressed. ( )

Wonderfully inspiring read. Jai as a caregiver went through so much and came out fighting, still dreaming, and an inspiration for all of us. I believe in dreams myself, but she energized me with this book to do better, to be better! Love it! ( )
