The most impressive aspect of Goodman’s writing is the candid discussions of race. He exposes his characters’ inner thoughts—even the ugliest thoughts, the ones that no one likes to admit they are thinking. Richie, especially, voices self-doubt and self-deprecation and seems particularly torn about his instinctual reactions and his rational ones. “He struggled to focus. …maybe it was because Tisha was black and he found it incredibly exciting. Was that wrong? Did his desire for her confirm he was the racist he already feared he was? Wouldn’t not wanting to make love to her because she was black even worse?” (51).
