OK – so I know that King. Or at least have memories of men that I have dated who, were I as clever as Bartlett, be able to spin a tale of woe that would have listeners laughing rather than looking at me with a “you poor thing” look. All that aside, this is a wonderfully funny collection of 4 event-driven stories, laden with Python-esque humor with an overlay from Kids in the Hall. Not particularly surprising as the author is from Newfoundland, and really – I’ve been there: my best friend’s mother was a Newfie – and there isn’t much to do BUT watch old reruns and television in the depths of winter.

You’ll have to suspend disbelief at the door, and be ready to just ‘go with’ the humor here, it’s not for everyone, but those who appreciate the not so subtle lampooning of stereotypes and situations will adore the read. Fast paced, a little bit of rambling, and characters that recur often enough to gain a decent perspective on their growth and development will keep you turning pages and others in the room wondering just what you are laughing about. Bartlett does cleverly wind in some references to the works he so obviously loves, including a nod to Douglas Adams and Hitchiker’s Guide, but you will find these are cleverly inserted and often don’t hit until long after you have passed their inclusion. Sneaky humor, that gives more than it takes, this is a delightful romp that is sure to brighten any day.
