Kirby “Smoke” Jensen is a central character in Johnstone country. Smoke is fast with his wits as well as with a gun. Now, after losing his ma, pa and brother Luke, Smoke begins his journey to learn how to survive off the land. He is hired as a U.S. Deputy Marshal in order to apprehend those who took his father’s life and any other task he is assigned. Preacher taught Smoke all he knew and walked alongside Smoke as he became a man.
Now Smoke and Preacher run across a massacre. After burying the dead, they follow some tracks and find a young lady alive, hiding in the bushes. Smoke never before thought of settling down and having a family but that is what happens until tragedy strikes. Once again, Smoke hits the trail to seek those who brought death to the innocent.
The people Smoke is seeking are those who sent death to his front door, and the trail to locate them is littered with casualties. Smoke is a fair man and trustworthy. He doesn’t seek to do harm to others unless they provoke him. The novel is filled with moments revealing Smoke as a young man and how he came to be known as the last mountain man.
If you like wild adventures with many page-turning climactic scenes in the old west, don’t pass this book by! I read the first book, Smoke Jensen: The Beginning, and while there are some repetitions from book one, it aided in the flow of telling the tale. Readers will find more books about this character as well as others in the vast Johnstone country by visiting the author’s website: https://williamjohnstonebooks.com
