Juvenile Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

For fans of Gillian Flynn, Caroline Cooney, and R.L. Stine comes Nobody’s There from four-time Edgar Allen Poe Young Adult Mystery Award winner Joan Lowery Nixon.

Furious at her father for breaking up their family, Abbie Thompson acted without thinking and got arrested for malicious mischief. Now the judge has assigned her to volunteer in a program that matches teens with the elderly. But Abbie doesn’t get just any elderly person. She gets Edna Merkel, a cranky, difficult woman who’s a member of the town’s crime prevention group. In fact, Mrs. Merkel is too active a member, and after she brags that she’s on to something big, she is attacked and ends up hospitalized. Suddenly the private investigator game is real, and only Abbie—with the help of Mrs. Merkel’s indecipherable notebook—can figure out who did it. But will Abbie get to the assailant before the assailant gets to her?

It was pleasant and very satisfying to read a traditional whodunit. The contemporary setting sadly coincides with the true to life broken homes and lonesome elderly. A really fun read. The descriptive characters are exceptionally image inspiring. There’s even a bit of marriage counseling for older readers. ( )

Another fun and exciting mystery from Joan Lowery Nixon. I was right there next to the character trying to solve the case with her. The story unraveled with a great plot, good characters, and some great twists along the way. Recommended for high schoolers. ( )

Abbie was devasted when her father called she and her mother and brother "Nobody" and walked out on them to start a new life with a much younger woman. So much so that she spies on her father and then throws rocks through his girlfriend's window! She is caught by the police and the judge sentences her to a program of befriending an Elderly person for a year - driving them around and helping them out for 12 months so as not to record a conviction. Unfortunately Abbie is paired with the highly disagrreable Mrs Edna Merkel; who spies on everyone and loves dobbing her neighbours and friends into the police. Abbie tolerates Edna and the police humour her hunches until suddenly Edna is attacked, her rings stolen and she is left fighting for her life in a coma in hospital. Abbie decides to finish the work Edna started by it is very complicated - could her attacker by the con men roofers or credit card fraudster she reported to the police, the Spanish book club member Jose who has illegal aliens workingf for him, the wierd neighbour who was recently involved in a bank heist or even Edna's own nephew Charlie who is incredibly nervous around the cops? A confusing puzzle that Abbie is determined to solve to take her mind off her father's divorce of her mother.
