How far would you go to save the world? I was given this book through the Making Connections ARR: Science Fiction group for an honest review, thank you.
I need to first get these thoughts off my chest before I begin my review. First, OMG! Paradoxes! Second, why aren’t more people reading and reviewing this book? People are seriously missing out on a great, entertaining read. This book reminded me of the many TV shows and stories that dealt with time paradoxes, but at the same time it has a unique take on it.
I want to start my review with the cover. It’s really well done. The colors, the fonts, the placement of the words, the images, everything is well chosen and laid out.
From the moment I started reading The Kronos Interference I knew it was going to be exceptional. It’s a book that made me think about a myriad of different topics in a new light and it stirred up many feelings in me, especially near the end concerning Jake. This book had it all, a fast pace, mystery, intrigue, suspense, along with science, metaphysics, philosophy, religion, Nazism, Freemasonry, family ties, homelessness and the concept of choices and the consequences of our choices. Despite the diversity of the subjects, the authors expertly wove each topic into a whole story that made sense.
The style of writing was clear and easy to understand. Even though the events happening to Jake remain a big mystery until the end, I had no trouble understanding what the authors were showing us. At the end, the readers find out what has been going on and then we realize it all makes sense. The authors gave us little bits and pieces of information throughout the story and it all comes together like a completed puzzle at the end. It was brilliant, exactly the kind of story that I love to read.
All the characters had unique personalities. I think my favorite was Beeze even though he was only a secondary character. The main character, Jacob 'Jake' Newman was complex. A physicist, he starts out as a pure scientist at heart, but through the events in the story he starts to change and begins to realize that there is more to life and the Universe than just science. He goes through tremendous growth in the story.
Now, I have to talk about what Jake did by going back in time. I think what Jake did was wrong, but I can understand why he did it. Family meant everything to him and he feared being alone. Also in a way his grandfather had influenced him with his mourning over Anna so that I think Jake took on the same behavior at the loss of family. Even though logically Jake knew that going back and messing with the timeline was a bad thing, his emotions were too wrapped up in his decision and he couldn’t see past them. He minimized his actions, and that is something so many of us do with our actions and decisions. He made his decisions based on what he wanted for himself, even though he felt it was also for those he loved. Going back in time was a selfish choice based on his fears and his need. Do not read this lengthy spoiler if you don’t want to know what happens to Jake and my thoughts about it.
In the end, the time paradox between Original Jacob and Future Jacob makes me think. Is time just rewritten? Like taking an eraser to paper? Or is it like when a writer says the character takes on a life of their own, making their own choices? But then some characters need to be completely rewritten with different choices and different outcomes. Does that mean that the Universe/God/Goddess/The Great Spirit/What-have-you, in a sense is a writer, with us all being characters in a story? This book leads to all sorts of ideas and I love it when a book makes me think.
The Kronos Interference is complete in itself, but there are many unanswered questions remaining at the end of the book. We are left knowing that Jake may be called upon again in the future for his help. I definitely look forward to any stories in this Universe and hope the next story is out soon. This book deserves no less than 5 stars
