I'm going to start by saying that I'm going to begin with a critique on the predictability and similarity in the plot and character creation. Annabel and Nicholas, the main characters are almost star-crossed, but just not quite. The play between them feels forced, and leaves the reader uninterested in their outcome. I believe that the story is good; just extremely predictable. I was surprised how quickly I was able to understand the character's thoughts and personalities. Though Annabel would be in the hopeless romantic category, she seemed to me as more clairvoyant than thrilled by romantic notions. He looks at her for a few moments and she's suddenly decided he loves her and they'll be great together. I did like the plot though and a few surprises along the way, which is always good in my opinion. Reading this made me want to say mayhap and aught throughout the day! I'm always a sucker for stories for about assassins because the make interesting protagonists, and I really liked the first chapter. But I then discovered that the writing style wasn't my cup of tea. I like romance, but this was too hearts and flowers for me. The language was too melodramatic, the characters too unrealistic. Moreover, I felt there wasn't enough dialogue and action to balance out all the introspection and telling (versus showing). I just couldn't get into it.
