Miss Lydia Charingford is always cheerful, and never more so than at Christmas time. But no matter how hard she smiles, she can't forget the youthful mistake that could have ruined her reputation. Even though the worst of her indiscretion was kept secret, one other person knows the truth of those dark days: the sarcastic Doctor Jonas Grantham. She wants nothing to do with him...or the butterflies that take flight in her stomach every time he looks her way.

Jonas Grantham has a secret, too: He's been in love with Lydia for more than a year. This winter, he's determined to conquer her dislike and win her for his own. It all starts with a wager and a kiss...

A Kiss for Midwinter is a novella (38,000 words) in the Brothers Sinister series. It follows The Duchess War. Each book stands on its own, but those who prefer to read in order might want to read that book first.

There are some good parts to this novella. I liked both of the main characters' relationships with their fathers. And I liked that the hero was a doctor.

But the relationship didn't completely click for me. I'm not sure why the hero has been in love with the heroine for over a year. Or why the heroine is so awful to the hero without (in my opinion) good reason.

Also, the book tells one story but shows another. Supposedly the heroine is sweet and optimistic, but she's shown as rude and always expects the worst from others. Supposedly the hero's prevailing characteristic is straightforwardness, but it takes him forever to be open with the heroine about his thoughts and feelings. ( )

Something that I find curious is how often people will say Courtney Milan writes "low steam/not very spicy" books. It is curious because I have not read a book by Courtney Milan that wasn't hot. I think this may be a "me" issue because, for me, it is not acts that dictate steam rather the vibes. . . and idunno Milan's books are horny! Big emotions and unsaid words and the tension of someone longing so desperately for the other person to like them, to see them reads pretty hot to me! And my god her prose sets my heart on fire. ( )

As one reads this novella, one gets a sense that Milan wants to right some of the wrongs dealt to frivolous characters in classic literature. A Duchess's War draws inspiration from Pride and Prejudice, and this novella is no exception. She seems to ask the question "is our judgement of these women characters just or is it sexist," and she justifies their conduct.

Lydia, whom I'm assuming is named after Lydia Bennet, is frivolous and cheerful beyond belief. On the surface, at least. However, it becomes clear to both readers and to the hero that she is not as happy-go-lucky as she seems. She was the victim of statutory rape and then poisoned by a doctor so that she would miscarry. The hero Grantham was a medical apprentice during this time, and Lydia resents the fact he knows about her past; however, the hero is madly in love with her.

The pair are cute, and their banter is fun to read. Compared to Minnie and Robert from the previous book, Lydia's reservations make more sense, and Grantham's continued courtship is supported by plenty of evidence that Lydia actually likes him. Overall, it's a sweet story with good pacing and memorable characters, despite its short length. ( )

2nd read- I have a hard time with the notion of self delusion to any significant degree, and that's a major aspect in this story. I get that it can be a protective mechanism, so I'm not even saying it's improbable, just that it makes me uncomfortable and is off-putting for me in a character. It's all the more impressive then, that *overall* I still like this story despite that. I can't even explain how it's possible that so much of the story can be almost painful for me to withstand, and then at the end of it I'm so pleased. lol. Just that the good outweighs the bad. I like that both characters are flawed, and quite different from each other, but that they see the other more clearly as time goes by, and are good for each other. I like the medical history thrown in, and how the subplot of hoarding is handled. I like the peeks into the lives of all the characters, and the discussions of societal standards. The self delusion is unsettling to me, but in the end, it's just a strong piece. ( )

He knew he tended toward gloom. It made him consider blood poisoning and heart attacks when someone else might see a touch of indigestion. Those carefully considered worst-case scenarios made him a good doctor, but they also made him feel like a dark little raincloud.
When Lydia Charingford was around, though, he felt like a smiling dark little raincloud. He liked the way she saw things, even as she baffled him. He liked the way she saw all the world…except the portion of it that contained him.
“Who wants lords a-leaping?” he asked. “If my true love brings me any number of lords shambling about in their cups on Christmas, I’ll have words for her. Someone’s going to break a bottle and cut his hand, leaping about like that, and then guess who’s going to be roused from his warm home on the holidays to stitch him up? ‘Oh, Doctor Grantham, you’d best come quickly!’” He made a rude noise.
I only said I would stop talking to you, he’d written. I never promised to stop loving you.
She hadn’t said he could speak, and so he didn’t. Not because he felt bound by the wager, but because… Because she needed to choose him at her own pace. To understand that he was willing to wait for her. And he wanted to know that she would choose him over her own dark fears.
“You and your technicalities.” But she only leaned against him, running her hand along his hip. “I suppose you want French letters instead of French hens? That’s not very romantic of you.” But she kissed him as she spoke.
“There is really nothing less romantic than chickens,” he told her. “They leave droppings all over the place, die at the slightest provocation, and are stupid enough to spend three weeks trying to hatch rocks. You keep your chickens. Let me have my true love, and hang the gifts.”
